How To Highlight Gray Hair And Add Dimension
By MARY WOJCICKI
Gray blending is a popular technique to incorporate gray hair into your existing hair color in a stylish way. Gray hair has a unique texture, so there are some things to consider before adding highlights for dimension.
When you’re ready to touch up your grays, colorist Janesa Morera suggests a highlight look that will “follow their natural pattern of lightness and depth, all while keeping the hairline bold.” Instead of gray and silver highlights, you can try blonde or herringbone highlights to complement your gray hair; if you have dark roots, you may want lowlights instead of highlights.
Morera also recommends face-framing highlights and lightening the face-framing pieces to brighten up the person’s whole look while giving dimension to the gray hair. Gray hair often takes longer to dye and is less likely to hold onto the dye, so it will require more maintenance.
