Sarah Hyland's Natural Hair Is Absolutely Gorgeous

Actor Sarah Hyland made a complete transformation during her run as Haley Dunphy on the hit comedy "Modern Family." Just as her roles have varied throughout her career, so too has her personal style. Hyland is typically seen at Hollywood events with her long, straight hair blowing in the wind or occasionally in a cute updo, but her real hair style and texture are different from what she usually sports on red carpets. It turns out that Hyland's natural tresses are curly! Her tight curls make the prettiest ringlets, and her locks always look well-maintained. When sporting her natural tresses, Hyland typically pulls her thick hair back and out of her face. This is wise since strong weather can be a disaster for curly hair. Luckily, bringing your natural curls back to life after being damaged isn't impossible.

As she has come into her own, Hyland has become more accepting of her curly hair and has chosen to wear it natural more frequently. She spoke with Allure in 2019 about how her hair type has changed over the years as a result of her struggle with kidney dysplasia. "I always think it's funny because my hair has been short since, like, 2013. I just wear extensions for Haley now," she recalled. "I didn't know just how curly it was going to be, though... I've had a lot of my hair fall out from being on medications and all that stuff, and now that I'm finally getting all this new growth, it's even curlier."

One of the most memorable moments of Sarah Hyland's life included her authentic hair type. When her husband, Wells Adams, proposed to her in 2019, Hyland's curly hair was sun-kissed in a messy updo. Hyland clipped her hair back and appeared to cascade the tips of her tresses over her head to give the illusion of bangs. She included elements of the look in her wedding day, too. During the ceremony, Hyland wore her hair in a polished, low side bun. "We created plenty of texture and tendrils around the hairline and nape of the neck," hairstylist Ryan Richman told Vogue of Hyland's wedding-day hairstyle. "The goal was a look that was appropriate for a princess on her wedding day, but 'make it as if the princess had just finished riding her horse through the countryside – not too perfect'."

In the past, Hyland had to defend her real hairstyle to followers online. When a social media user accused Hyland of perming her hair, she replied on X, "I'd like to say this once. IT'S NOT A PERM. IT'S JUST MY HAIR." It appears that other stars are following suit by embracing their authentic hair types. Ariana Grande has naturally curly hair and chose to highlight the style while promoting 2024's "Wicked."
