Lizzo's Complete Weight-Loss Transformation

Aside from her catchy music, Lizzo has carved herself a permanent place in pop culture for her role as a beacon of body positivity. The Michigan-born star gained the respect of millions of fans after refusing to succumb to the pressure to fit a certain size, which has notoriously plagued the entertainment industry. For instance, the "Soulmate" hitmaker frequently takes to social media to show off her body and stand proud in the face of shamers demanding she change her body to fit conventional beauty standards. In doing so, she's dismantled several harmful ideas that persist surrounding health, including the fact that fitness is exclusively reserved for those of a smaller size. She's proven her stamina levels and physical capacity with a number of high-energy performances over the years — not that she should have to! — sometimes even combining dancing with playing the flute without ever running out of breath.

In 2024, Lizzo began making changes to her physical and mental health, which she occasionally opened up about to the press and with fans via social media. In addition to switching up her fitness routine (she certainly understands all the benefits of adding jumping rope to her workout), she left behind her vegan diet and also reframed her views on body positivity, highlighting the concept of body neutrality instead. After social media users noticed that the star began looking physically smaller throughout the year, Lizzo even had to defend herself against Ozempic accusations. But regardless of what her body looks like, Lizzo continues to set an example of practicing self-love and kindness and prioritizing health over numbers on the scale, sizes on clothing tags, or comments from haters.

2015-2023: Lizzo commits to fitness without aspiring to lose weight

Lizzo got her first taste of fame back in 2014, when she collaborated with Prince on the song "Boytrouble," but she became a mainstream success in 2016 with the release of her smash hit "Good as H***." She then made waves for her self-love activism and stance on body positivity just as much as she did for her music, all the while crushing her fitness goals. In February 2020, she posted a video of herself jumping rope, tagging her fitness trainer, Marcus Ely.

That June, Lizzo took to TikTok to update her fans on her fitness efforts (showing a montage of herself working out, no less), while also slamming body-shamers. "Hey, so I've been working out consistently for the last five years," Lizzo said in a voiceover. "And it may come as a surprise to some of ya'll that I'm not working out to have your ideal body type. I'm working out to have my ideal body type ... I am beautiful, I am strong ..." Then, the star added, "Health is also what happens on the inside. And a lot of ya'll need to do a f—— cleanse for your insides. Namaste."

At the end of 2020, the "About D*** Time" singer opened up about her health routine at the time in another post, confirming she had detoxed and was consuming "greens and water and fruit and protein and sunlight." But the resounding message of her post was that routines like that aren't necessary to being beautiful or healthy — that's just a common detoxing myth that diet culture keeps feeding us. "That was my way," she wrote. "You can do life your way. Remember, despite anything anyone says or does, DO WHAT YOU WANT WITH YOUR BODY." Fast-forward to March 2021, and Lizzo posted another montage chronicling her fitness journey, which showed her exercising as far back as 2018 and then proudly showing off her body at various stages. "It's ok to change," she wrote in the caption. "I love every stage my body fluctuates to. The feats your body pulls off everyday to function is honestly iconic."

March 2024: Lizzo maintains her health commitment and shifts to a 'body neutrality' ethos

The most monumental year in Lizzo's weight-loss journey seemed to be 2024, when fans really zeroed in on her losing weight. In January, she posted a snap of herself on Instagram that showed her posing in her closet with her midriff showing with the caption, "Actin skinny." Fans quickly commented on the singer's body, with some showing support for her journey. "Looking good, Lizzo," one fan wrote with a heart emoji. But critics took the opportunity to accuse Lizzo of using medication to lose weight. "Bro I'm so sad," posted one user. "I really thought you cared about body positivity. And you just jump on the [O]zempic train. This always happens."

In March, Lizzo decided to open up about her weight-loss journey to The New York Times, revealing that she had been losing weight "very slowly" by doing activities like walking and Pilates. She also admitted that her view of body positivity had shifted to something more attainable. "The idea of body positivity, it's moved away from the antiquated mainstream conception," she said, adding, "It's evolved into body neutrality." The singer also made it clear that she doesn't answer to anyone when it comes to her health and fitness, stating that her body "is nobody's business."

Behind the scenes, Lizzo continued to work toward her goals, taking the time to post an Instagram reel in June that showed her working out in a gym with a jump rope, weights, and other equipment. In a voiceover, she explained, "I do circuits. So I do three rounds of three to four different exercises about 12 or 15 times ... Basically I go back and forth between all of these in separate little rounds."

August-September 2024: Lizzo confirms that her transformation is mental and physical alike

As the second half of 2024 arrived, Lizzo kept up her commitment to fitness and general health. Since fans and haters alike tended to focus on her changing body, she made it clear in an August Instagram post that the changes that were occurring on the inside were even more important to her. "I wasn't gonna post this on IG but 2021 me would be soooo proud of 2024 me," she wrote in the caption of the post, which showed her modeling two different skin-tight outfits. "And I'm NOT only talking about my body if yall only KNEWWWW what I've done for my mental & emotional health in the last year..."

Earlier in the month, she took to TikTok to show fans another glimpse into her impressive jump-rope routine, followed by another gym selfie in September where she gave more insight into her mental health. "A year ago today I was so broken and dark that I couldn't have imagined feeling the way I do now," she wrote in the caption. "Seeing her fitness journey is amazing, it honestly inspires and motivates me to try and lose weight," one supportive fan commented on the post.

Later in the month, Lizzo shared that one of the dampeners of her improving mood was being bombarded with accusations about taking Ozempic, leading her to later dress up as the drug for Halloween to spite the haters. Keeping her tone light and humorous, she shared on Instagram that social media users had enquired about whether or not she had taken the drug even though she had spent five months on a "weight training and calorie deficit" program.

October-November 2024: Lizzo acknowledges setbacks in her journey and opens up about her diet

Anyone who's been on a health or weight-loss journey knows that the road is full of setbacks. As someone in the public eye, Lizzo uses her platform to share not only the ups of her experience but also the downsides and setbacks. At the beginning of October, she took to TikTok to reveal that she ate more than she normally would the day before, and she was "feeling really bad about it." In the caption, she noted, "I'm trying to remind myself that my body needed that nourishment."

Though any glimpses into her journey tended to focus on exercise and mental health rather than diet, Lizzo did reveal in an October Instagram video that she had discontinued her vegan diet. "What I eat in a day as a former vegan who added protein to her diet," the star said in a voiceover. In the video, Lizzo showed off her lemon water, followed by a plate of egg-white cups, cauliflower hash browns, and fruit — perhaps a healthy lifestyle might start with a balanced breakfast after all. She then had a glass of okra water, a buffalo-chicken lettuce wrap, homemade peach tea, and grilled chicken, asparagus, and carrots. Diet can be a sensitive subject, but Lizzo clarified that she still thinks veganism is healthy and aspires to be a raw alkaline vegan one day. She wasn't necessarily saying that TikTok's lion diet is actually good for you, but at that time, a diet higher in animal protein was helping her hit her goals and feel her best.

By November, the "Pink" singer was noticeably thinner, leading to more Ozempic accusations on another post. "Can yall go one post without mentioning how 'skinny she's getting' or how she's 'using ozempic,”' one fan commented in her defense. "She's been documenting her fitness and healthy eating journey this whole time."

2025: Lizzo reaches her 'weight release' goal

Taking her calorie deficit and weight training into a new year, Lizzo kicked off 2025 with a bang. Toward the end of January, she shared with her Instagram followers that she had achieved an important health goal. "I did it," she captioned the post. "Today when I stepped on my scale, I reached my weight release goal. I haven't seen this number since 2014!" As ever, Lizzo used the opportunity to remind her fans that they also have the power to achieve their goals, whatever they may be.

No matter her size, Lizzo's confidence levels appear to remain the same. In 2025, she continued sharing photos of herself just as she always had, though now the posts were filled with comments about her weight loss. Responding to a March Instagram post that shows Lizzo's dramatically slimmed-down figure at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, one fan wrote, "Don't let nobody make you feel like weight loss made you fine. You've been that girl." Later that month, she shared a TikTok announcing that she'd finally tried Golden Diner pancakes, letting fans know that starvation and deprivation had no roles to play in her journey.

As she gears up for the release of a new album later in the year, we can't wait to see how much more Lizzo progresses with her journey, not only in terms of weight loss but also self-love and acceptance.
