Never one to stop reinventing herself, Vera Wang became a wedding dress designer at the age of 40 after working for Vogue and Ralph Lauren. In the 30 years since, Wang has built a wildly successful business designing and selling wedding dresses, as well as ready-to-wear clothing, jewelry, and fragrances. Not only do brides all over the world wear Vera Wang gowns on their wedding days, but tons of celebrities have chosen Wang's designs for their big day as well. From simple slinky dresses with '90s vibes to massive princess-inspired gowns with full tulle skirts, Wang has designed all kinds of dresses for all kinds of brides. However, one thing remains the same no matter what kind of dress she's designing, and that's staying true to her vision.

In a talk with Harper's Bazaar, Wang opened up about her unique vision for wedding wear, saying, "One year I did a black and nude lingerie-inspired collection because that's what all my girlfriends were wearing. A lot of people were shocked — they said it was depressing to have brides in black. I said, 'Not at all, it's sexy.' Then of course a lot of brides embraced it."

Discussing her goals as a designer, she surmised, "I like to think that we really gave women permission to experiment and to be free." The iconic fashion guru also reflected on her legacy in the bridal industry: "Especially in the world of weddings; I'm seen as a quiet renegade. Okay, maybe not so quiet."

At her 1993 wedding to Tommy Mottola, the iconic Mariah Carey wanted to make a big style statement. Speaking to Page Six in 2022, Vera Wang opened up about the factors that influenced the design of Carey's first wedding dress, citing Princess Diana's wedding as a big inspiration. "This was the era of Princess Diana and she was very moved and influenced by that wedding," Wang said. Both the wedding dress and Princess Diana's revenge dress were some of the most iconic looks in fashion history. 

Wang went on to describe the overall look that Carey was aiming for, saying, "She wanted that level of pomp and circumstance and romance and volume. She really wanted a princess look, and it was just one of those weddings that was truly a fairytale in the sense of scale." Undoubtedly, Carey's wedding dress had those dramatic princess vibes full of '90s nostalgia when it comes to the styling. Along with the dress, which featured a full skirt and puffy off-the-shoulder sleeves, Carey also wore a long veil and an eye-catching tiara.

While it may have been a beautiful dress, it seems that the memories of the marriage weren't so beautiful for Carey. In an appearance on "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen," she spoke of wanting to burn the gown in a music video. "When I did 'We Belong Together,' I was going to burn the wedding dress then and that was my original wedding dress," she told a fan who had called in. The director of the video had other plans, though, and decided it wasn't a practical move since the dress had a 27-foot-long train. "I wanted to burn it at the end of the video," Carey added. "I thought it would've been dramatic, nobody understood."

While some may be looking at Ivanka Trump outfits that may have had special meanings, her elegant 2009 wedding dress is worth taking a look at, too. The simple gown, which featured short lace sleeves and small buttons down the back of the bodice, had a very specific inspiration. "She was actually very much about being covered and I seized on the chance to do a dress that wasn't naked and very Hollywood," Vera Wang told The New York Times, adding that Ivanka was particularly fond of Grace Kelly's wedding dress, which she wore to tie the knot with Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956.

Ivanka paired the gown with a long veil, a solid white bouquet, and simple but chunky jewelry. "You could see the layers underneath when she moved," Wang recalled, noting that there were three kinds of lace used to make the regal gown.

In 2022, "Modern Family" star Sarah Hyland was celebrating her wedding and rocking multiple Vera Wang looks, too. The first gown, which she wore for the ceremony, featured a train and a thigh-high slit. Hyland also paired the strapless gown with a long veil and pointed-toe pumps. For the reception, she donned a strapless lace white dress, also designed by the legendary fashion house. Not only did she get to have an elegant look for her wedding, but she also got a Vera Wang style that showed off her sense of fun, as well.

While speaking to Vogue, Hyland opened up about the vision she had for her wedding and how her wedding dress fit into the overall picture. "We had already decided on our venue before I started the process of styling with Brad [Goreski] and Daniela [Viviana-Romero], so it really was about creating a piece that fit the aesthetic of the property," she explained.

"Our venue has the color palette of a chateau in the countryside of France with the architectural design of an Italian castle." Hyland continued. "I tried on a dress at Vera's that fit the bill perfectly, and it all clicked."

When it came to Kim Kardashian's 2011 wedding, which kicked off her 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries, a lot of thought went into finding just the right dress for the occasion. Speaking to People, Kim Kardashian opened up about the indecisiveness she felt around choosing the right dress, saying, "I truly, up until two days before [the wedding], could not decide which to wear." Having some trouble picking the right look is totally understandable since the event was garnering so much attention. In fact, the wax museum Madame Tussaud's even unveiled a wax figure of Kardashian in a similar but different wedding gown than the Vera Wang dress she donned for her nuptials two days before she was set to walk down the aisle.

Vera Wang also opened up to People about Kardashian's wedding dress and explained the balance of fairy-tale vibes and sultry style that they were aiming for. "It was Cinderella," she said of the second frock that Kardashian wore, after walking down the aisle in her princess gown. "But Cinderella with a very sexy body. She has a very Liz Taylor or Sophia Loren kind of body and we didn't want to lose that."

Alicia Keys is another one of many big-name celebrities who turned to Vera Wang for help in creating the right wedding dress. For Keys, though, it wasn't so much about creating an ethereal fairy-tale or princess-style look. Old Hollywood glamour, another popular aesthetic among celebs, was not what she wanted, either. Instead, it was all about making a more goddess-inspired vision come to life. At her Mediterranean wedding, Keys wore a simple white one-shoulder, empire-waist dress with a strap going across her chest. She accessorized the Grecian gown with a diamond headdress and wore her hair in a smooth, low bun.

In an Instagram post looking back on her wedding day, Keys added a caption to a picture of herself and her husband Swizz Beatz, saying, "This is the day we got married! Look at these cutie pies!! Those same stars are still in our eyes And it's only getting better!!!!"

Whether or not you've paid attention to the stunning style transformation of Victoria Beckham, it's safe to say her 1999 wedding dress is one of her most attention-grabbing looks. Although Victoria Beckham's wedding gown might have had a lot of simple elegance, putting the dress together was certainly not a simple task. In a talk with People, Vera Wang opened up about the teamwork that went into building a beautiful bespoke wedding dress for Posh Spice. "I call it the transatlantic dress," she jokes. "That bodice flew back and forth four times on the Concorde."

Explaining the reason why so much back and forth was involved in crafting the dress, she continued, "The actual under-bodice was made by a very famous couture corsetiere named Mister Pearl, who works only out of London. He makes corsets that have to be pulled with these metal things, which is how corsets were done in the old days," she says. For Beckham, it seems the effort was worth it to create the look she wanted. Wang went on to explain the process of putting on the bodice: "It takes about 45 minutes to lace up, and it can take your waist down to literally 18 inches, [like] Scarlett O'Hara."

Creating Beckham's dress didn't just involve a lot of travel, the project took a lot of time, too. Due to Beckham's pregnancy with her son Brooklyn, the work on the wedding dress was put on hold. "So then we delayed the wedding for two years," Wang explained. "Then we resumed, or maybe a year and a half. So that is [what] I call the transatlantic wedding with Victoria and David."

We might all know about Hailey Bieber's most iconic nail looks over the years, but the truth is she's also been a style icon when it comes to other areas of fashion, like maternity style and, of course, wedding trends. Speaking to Vogue, Vera Wang gushed about Bieber's influential style. "Hailey's such an it girl!" she said. "There's just something very poetic in the way she moves. There's this sense of whimsy, and it's a very personal way of being. It's so charming."

She also discussed Bieber's multiple looks and the inspiration for her reception gown, which she paired with sneakers. "This was [definitely] more of the party dress," she recalled. "They were much more open to something seductive, light, and sensual [for this look]. The wedding dress had a certain formality to it. This was meant to be the complete opposite. I love using the dancer reference with this because when I see her I sort of see a ballerina."

In a talk with People, Wang continued to open up about Bieber's unique style and how much she related to her approach to fashion. "I was very happy because I adore her style," she observed. "To me, she's like a dancer: She has a long neck and back. She wears clothes in her own way and adds her own style to it. And she's cool. I relate to her because I think I'm a teenager." Wang continued to express her joy at working with Bieber to create her wedding look, noting, "I'm just very happy that she wore it, and she partied in it, and she wore it with sneakers, and that's just my kind of deal. It couldn't have been a better thing for us."

While Victoria Beckham's dress may have taken tons of traveling and a lot of time to make, it was Jennifer Lopez's dress intended for her called-off wedding with Ben Affleck that really took the cake for Vera Wang. Of all the gowns that she designed in her career working with celebrities, Lopez's was the most taxing. Altogether, the gown featured 18 tiers. Of the dress, Wang said to the press, "It took eight months and we made three dresses. It pushed me out of my own box and comfort zone" (via Glamour).

Despite the fact that it was reported that Wang and Lopez had a falling out over the dress designed for the wedding that didn't happen (likely due to all the red flags in Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez's relationship), Lopez went on to wear a Vera Wang gown for her 2004 wedding to Marc Anthony. According to the editor-in-chief of Us Magazine Janice Min, it didn't seem that Wang designed another dress for Lopez. "She had some stylists from another designer help her get into the dress, which leads us to believe it was bought off the rack," Min said to CBS News.

Either way, the body-hugging dress with ruffle details had a lot of fresh spring-time charm. That said, not many got a good view of her bridal look as she had a very low-key, private wedding, and the only snapshots of her in her wedding dress were those caught by the paparazzi. Notably, Lopez ended up going with three Ralph Lauren gowns when she eventually wed Ben Affleck in 2022.

Coachella queen Vanessa Hudgens was all about bringing the festival vibes to her big day when she wed baseball player Cole Tucker in 2023. In a conversation with Vogue, Hudgens opened up about the Vera Wang dress she chose. "I put it on, and I was like, 'It's perfect. It's easy, it's simple, and it's chic,'" she recalled. Hudgens also opened up about the trust she had in Wang, along with Wang's amazing track record of being a wedding dress designer for the stars, saying, "She also has such an amazing résumé of women that she's dressed for the most important day of their lives, and I was like, 'Who better to do it than a friend?'"

Gwen Stefani is yet another big celeb who chose to go with Vera Wang for the big day. For her wedding ceremony, Stefani opted for a dramatic look: a strapless, fitted dress with a plunging neckline and a frothy tulle skirt. She paired it with a dramatic veil and some white cowboy-inspired stiletto boots. For her reception, Stefani rocked a shorter version of her wedding dress, this time with a much shorter veil, as well. In an Instagram post, Stefani showed off her edgy reception look and added the caption, "You need a party dress when you get to marry Blake Shelton."

Speaking to Page Six in 2022, Vera Wang opened up about collaborating with Stefani, saying,"Gwen knows clothes. Many performers at that level, they're very savvy about how they look best — most women are, but when your livelihood is about performance, it's even more [so]. I happen to know Gwen, and I knew a lot about the wedding in terms of how they were going to celebrate. She took some inspiration from one of the collections I did, but on the other hand, [this gown] had so much of Gwen's personality. There was this kind of charm and this kind of cool and a little bit of a Western vibe, and was just perfect for them."

At her 2011 wedding to Kings of Leon singer Caleb Followill, Victoria's Secret model Lily Aldridge rocked an understated strapless Vera Wang dress. At her small family-only wedding, the simple lacy dress truly stunned and created a feel of timeless elegance.

The bride kept the overall look effortless and laid-back by letting her hair fall in loose curls and keeping accessories to a minimum. Something else that added a lot of classic charm to the look was the veil. Aldridge opted for a short veil, the bridal silhouette giving Old Hollywood glamour to your wedding look.

The whole affair was kept as private and low-key as possible, with even the groom being in the dark about the wedding date. In a talk with People, Followill said, "You have to ask Lily [about the wedding date]. She won't tell me. I think it's somewhere between May 10 and May 20, but she won't tell me because I have a big mouth."
