Red Flags In Carrie Underwood And Mike Fisher's Marriage
Country music star Carrie Underwood and former NHL player Mike Fisher began dating in 2008, got engaged in 2009, and tied the knot in 2010. Recently — and interestingly — Underwood and Fisher's approach to privacy has changed, with the couple trying their best to remove their relationship from the spotlight. "They used to share more, but they've have had a lot of trolling so don't want to put themselves through any unnecessary negativity," a source revealed to the Daily Mail in January 2025. "There are a lot of haters out there and both Carrie and Mike like to keep things positive."
At Glam, though, we can't help but raise an eyebrow when celebrity couples suddenly decide to go private, as we've seen enough Hollywood romances crumble right after taking the "privacy" route. To get to the bottom of whether there are any red flags in Underwood and Fisher's relationship, we turned to matchmaker Susan Trombetti, CEO of Exclusive Matchmaking. "When it comes to Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher's relationship, much isn't known about them," Trombetti shares exclusively with us. "She speaks about him every so often and said they are working on communication issues, and they both support each other but that's it. They seem private and quiet." Still, Trombetti didn't hold back about what could spell trouble in paradise for this long-standing couple. Are they the real deal, or are cracks starting to show?
Mike Fisher is known to have a strong temper
It's no secret that hockey can be a dangerous sport, and Mike Fisher knows that all too well. Those who have followed his career know that he's also no stranger to letting his temper get the best of him. Case in point, he ended up knocking out a rival team member's tooth during a fight at a Nashville Predators vs. Anaheim Ducks game in 2015.
"He seems to have some problems with self-regulation, and if that spills over to the marriage, they have a problem," Susan Trombetti explains exclusively to Glam. "It probably does in some way. She definitely seems to be the calming force, though." And Trombetti is most likely right. In 2010, a source revealed that after the couple got into an argument, things started heating up. "The conversation turned into a screaming match, and ended with Carrie in tears after locking herself in the bathroom," the source revealed (via NBC Sports). We all know that there are red flag arguments you shouldn't have at the beginning of your relationship, and knowing that the two argued to this extent during their honeymoon phase is concerning.
Mike Fisher's retirement while Carrie Underwood's still working could stir up trouble
In 2017, Mike Fisher retired from hockey after a successful career that spanned almost two decades. "This is the hardest decision I've ever had to make, but I know I've made the right one. I've decided to retire from the NHL," he wrote in an open letter to his fans published by The Tennessean. Of course, there's no doubt that Fisher's retirement changed the dynamic between him and his wife, Carrie Underwood. After all, the "Two Black Cadillacs" singer continued working on her music career, leaving Fisher as the spouse with a suddenly wide-open schedule.
"Anytime one partner retires, there can be conflict and fall out," Susan Trombetti tells Glam exclusively. "His retirement was a while ago now, so hopefully they have worked it out, but her career taking center stage at that time and now might not feel good for him." This was also the year of Underwood's accident, making it a particularly rough one for the couple (but more on that later).
Spending time apart because of work could hurt Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher
As with any celebrity couple, time apart and busy schedules are always major red flags. Considering that Mike Fisher was actively playing in the NHL for a big chunk of their relationship, there's no doubt that his and Carrie Underwood's relationship faced its fair share of challenges. Additionally, the musician had her own career commitments that didn't allow her to tag along with him throughout the sports season.
"Both of them have mentioned this as a stressor for their marriage," Susan Trombetti shares exclusively with Glam. "At least now, he is retired. All the travel separating a couple is never good for a marriage." Being there for a loved one when you're long-distance is very difficult, not to mention that time apart can be especially stressful with young children (the couple has two sons, one born in 2015 and one in 2019). In fact, the "Before He Cheats" singer has admitted that having kids added a whole new layer of stress to their relationship. "I remember when we first found out we were gonna have him, it [was] like, 'How are we gonna do this? Our lives are so crazy as it is,'" she told People in 2017.
Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher's kids could put stress on their marriage
Having kids isn't a red flag on its own, but juggling children and two jam-packed schedules can become a major source of stress that harms a romantic relationship, especially if a couple doesn't communicate well. "I would imagine they have help, but the constant shuttling them here and there can be very stressful," Susan Trombetti explains exclusively to Glam. "It takes time from the couple and makes you feel frazzled."
Of course, it's also important to still prioritize your relationship after you have kids, and if Mike Fisher and Carrie Underwood aren't doing that, this could definitely be a red flag. Sure, as the children grow older, some of the pressure tends to ease up, but with two small children and two demanding schedules right now, the couple's romance is almost guaranteed to take a hit.
Being in the spotlight all the time must be hard for Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher
It's no secret that public relationships have an additional element that most people don't have to deal with: constant media scrutiny. In fact, as we've already mentioned, Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher have decided to become a bit more private in recent years by not sharing too many details about their personal lives with the public.
"The press is always digging and speculating," Susan Trombetti tells us exclusively. "Some of the media even went so far as to start rumors that maybe he was behind her facial injury which is ridiculous. I wasn't there, but that sounds like an accident to me and horrible to make those sorts of accusations." Of course, this is referencing her 2017 accident, when she missed a step and fell, causing her to need ample stitches in her face. Carrie Underwood's even talked about how her face has changed over the years since the accident. Ultimately, eve when the rumors in the media are fake, they can still become a burden for the couple, especially if they're not on the same page when it comes to how they want to deal with them.
