The Most Lavish Celebrity Valentine's Day Gestures
Whether or not you go for the usual chocolate hearts and roses, Valentine's Day can be the perfect occasion to show affection for the loved ones in your life, especially romantic partners. However, the pressure and trappings of this lovey-dovey holiday can also be a lot to live up to — so when money is no object, the rich and famous often go above and beyond what the average Joe would pick as a Valentine's Day present. After all, these are people who are accustomed to amenities like private jets, mega mansions, and the ultra-luxe gift bags given to Oscar nominees.
They say celebrities are just like us, but are they, really? On holidays like Valentine's Day, it seems clear that stars are living in a whole different stratosphere. From designing bogglingly expensive jewelry to renting out entire tourist attractions, A-listers sometimes grace their beloveds with incredibly lavish V-Day gestures.
Kanye West hired jazz musician Kenny G to serenade Kim Kardashian on Valentine's Day
The right music can really set the mood on Valentine's Day. However, Kanye West decided to bypass the usual Barry White playlist or even a performance of his own tunes to surprise his then-wife, Kim Kardashian, with another artist synonymous with romance: world-famous jazz saxophonist Kenny G. West, now legally named Ye, hired Kenny G. to play live in the couple's empty living room, surrounded only by an army of roses in individual vases.
NO BIG DEAL KENNY G IN MY LIVING ROOM!!! Happy Valentines Day 💋💋💋 pic.twitter.com/A1GD0UlEwu
— Kim Kardashian (@KimKardashian) February 14, 2019
"No big deal, Kenny G in my living room! Happy Valentine's Day," Kardashian captioned a video of the performance on X, formerly known as Twitter. Meanwhile, Kenny G. explained to Rolling Stone how a publicist pitched him the idea. "Kanye had requested me to come to the house and serenade Kim in the morning: 'It's going to be a room surrounded with roses, and you're going to stand in the middle of the roses and play.' I thought, 'That actually sounds really beautiful.'"
So, how much did this likely set Ye back? The flowers alone could have easily cost thousands of dollars. Kenny G.'s performance fee is a little more mysterious. The saxophonist's profile on Booking Entertainment only specifies that his services are somewhere south of $150,000, which could still indicate a pretty hefty price tag. And while Kardashian and Ye would go on to divorce in 2022, this gesture set the bar pretty high for any future beaus.
David Beckham dropped $8 million on a designer necklace for Victoria on Valentine's Day
Jewelry is a classic present for Valentine's Day, but celebs like David Beckham take this to a whole new level. In 2006, the soccer star honored his wife, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, with a Bulgari necklace dripping in diamonds and rubies. Apparently, David was even involved in designing the striking piece, which ended up costing him a cool $8 million. How fabulous was it? Let's put it this way: The necklace was so stunning that it fit right in among the glitz and glamor of the Met Gala, where Victoria flaunted it that same year.
While this expensive piece may sound like a once-in-a-lifetime present, David has a history of spoiling his wife with jewelry. For instance, Victoria is known to own and rotate through a collection of 15 engagement rings, from the original three-carat, marquise-cut diamond ring that David proposed with in 1998 — worth $85,000 at the time — to the square-cut yellow diamond ring that she debuted 20 years later in 2018. Talk about lavish gestures!
Hailey Bieber presented Justin with a $10,000 ice cream for Valentine's Day
For Valentine's Day 2020, Hailey Bieber decided to think outside the box for her hubby. Instead of defaulting to some overdone symbol of romance, the model and actor gifted Justin Bieber with a present so personal that it's downright puzzling to everyone else: a limited edition bejeweled Dreamsicle worth $10,000. This non-edible version of the iconic ice cream treat was an opulent take on pop(sicle) art by artist Dan Life, who's only created 10 of the sparkly Dreamsicles, painstakingly applying each with more than 12,000 pink and white crystals.
Life is known for his bejeweled art, from gem-studded Beanie Babies and glittering Pokémon necklaces to other faux ice creams, like crystallized Bomb Pops and Strawberry Shortcake bars. So, what made Hailey go for his Dreamsicle design? Unclear. But even before her V-Day surprise, Justin was already a fan of Life's work — the two men had even appeared in photos together in 2019. Plus, the style of the Dreamsicle piece is very much in keeping with the aesthetic in the Biebers' home, which features a lot of youthful art and collectibles, like mounted skateboards, graffiti canvases, and stuffed animals arranged in museum-style displays. So, while the gift of a stylized Dreamsicle may seem odd to the rest of us, it probably fits right in with the Biebers' decor.
Michael B. Jordan rented out an entire aquarium for Valentine's Day
Tackling your first Valentine's Day with a new partner can be tricky. How much romance is too much or not enough? Usually, the key is to communicate your expectations, but we doubt that model Lori Harvey demanded anything close to her extravagant first Valentine's Day with "Black Panther" actor Michael B. Jordan. Jordan evidently decided that there was no such thing as "too much," renting out an entire aquarium for their private enjoyment. Not just any aquarium, either — he closed down the massive Georgia Aquarium, which is the largest in the United States.
"My baby rented ... the aquarium so we could do a private tour and see the turtles, and then we walked into this," Harvey wrote in her Instagram stories at the time, showcasing photos of the aquarium's underwater viewing tunnel strewn with rose petals and candles (via People). And the date didn't end there. After their aquatic adventure, Jordan and Harvey enjoyed a dinner from luxury restaurant Nobu and retired to an equally extravagant rose-filled hotel room.
How much did all this cost? Jordan hasn't said, simply attributing the dramatic date to "pent-up romance" thanks to the social distancing restrictions of COVID-19. "You gotta be even more creative because there wasn't a lot of things that were open. The circumstances of a lot of things forced me to be a bit of a thinker on that one," he said on the "Jemele Hill Is Unbothered" podcast in 2021. "I kind of put myself in a tough situation because I have to figure out next year." As it ultimately turned out, Jordan only had to wrack his brain for two more V-Day dates with Harvey because, despite his grand overtures, the couple split in June 2022.
Angelina Jolie bought Brad Pitt an $18,500 tree for Valentine's Day
The days of romance between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt may be long gone, but once upon a time, these lovers went all out on Valentine's Day gestures. In 2010, at the height of their 12-year relationship, Jolie spent nearly $19,000 on a 200-year-old olive tree to be planted at the couple's shared estate in France, Chateau Miraval, which was worth $60 million at the time. According to an anonymous source at The UK Sun, Jolie bought the tree "from a nursery called The English Garden Centre in Valbonne, near their house. It's a very special tree and cost her a fortune" (via HuffPost).
Why an olive tree, you ask? Neither Jolie nor Pitt has ever explained the significance of this choice for Valentine's Day, but there are theories. Olive trees famously represent peace and forgiveness, as in the old adage of "extending an olive branch." This could speak to a period of reconciliation — interesting timing, as the couple had been fighting rumors of a secret split that same year, even suing British tabloid News of the World for its insinuations of relationship trouble. While we may never know the whole story, it's possible that the expensive olive tree was meant to be a symbol of solidarity. Unfortunately, we do know how that turned out — it took eight long years to finally settle the duo's acrimonious divorce in late 2024, and Angelina Jolie got the final word against Brad Pitt by immediately stepping out in a revenge dress at the 2025 Golden Globes.
Jerry O'Connell had a whole vineyard installed for Valentine's Day
Angelina Jolie isn't the only celebrity who's taken a botanical approach to Valentine's Day gestures. "The Talk" co-host Jerry O'Connell once surprised his wife, "X-Men" star Rebecca Romijn, with an entire vineyard. What's more, he didn't just sign a check for an existing winery — he had a brand-new vineyard established at their own home in California, landscaping the area with over 800 Merlot and Cabernet grape plants. "My husband put in a vineyard about six years ago in our house. It was a Valentine's present," Romijn told InStyle in 2015 (via Us Weekly).
This romantic gift also turned out to be a fun side hustle. Eventually, Romijn and O'Connell were able to make enough decent vino to create their own label, Wagon Wheel Wine. "We started 10 years ago and the vines ... finally matured and we've made wine," Romijn said on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" in 2020 (via People). "It's a nice table wine and we are currently selling it at some restaurants in our area." Neither performer plans to quit their day job, though. As Romijn observed, "We're not breaking even. We're still paying for our hobby." That's one heck of a hobby, though. Maybe Romijn and O'Connell can give us some tips to avoid those dreaded wine hangovers after our own Valentine's Day dates.
