The Stunning Style Transformation Of Candace Cameron Bure
If you grew up in the '80s or the '90s, you definitely knew who Candace Cameron Bure was. The star — who was portraying D.J. Tanner on the cult sitcom "Full House" — was undoubtably the casual older sister we all wanted to have. Today, Candace Cameron Bure is well into her career as a successful actor, but she certainly hasn't slowed down. While the star has become somewhat of a Hallmark Channel queen, we have actually gathered to talk about her style.
And with almost four decades in the world of show business, there's quite a bit to discuss. From her exploration of '90s fashion to the moments when she was ready to embrace a more youthful look, the actor's style has subtly changed over the years. While Candace Cameron Bure has worn an inappropriate outfit or two during her time in the spotlight, we have to admit that we're actually quite fond of her style — or rather, her ability to authentically pull off elegant and casual fashion simultaneously!
1987-1995: Full House star Candace Cameron Bure is all about late '80s and early '90s fashion
While young Candace Cameron Bure had been acting since the mid-'80s, it wasn't until her portrayal of D.J. Tanner on "Full House" that the actor became a television staple. When the show premiered in 1987, Cameron Bure was only 11 years old, and her style was everything a tween at the time was about: denim, casual tees, and voluminous bangs. When asked what the worst trends of the era were, she revealed that she actually participated in many of them. "It was in the '80s, so I guess big hair and high bangs. And I had so many gummy bracelets," she told Seventeen in 2009. "While we were doing 'Full House,' we were like, 'You know, in 10 years, we're going to look back on this and think this is horrible.' But everyone looked like that!"
As the star was growing into a teen, her style remained on trend, with chokers and dresses becoming a staple for her in the early '90s. However, Cameron Bure told Seventeen that she didn't think she really had a signature style at the time. "I had no style when I was 17! I look at teenagers now and say, 'I wish I'd looked like them when I was that age.' I had no style whatsoever, but style also wasn't as prominent as it is today. I was just very laid back, usually wearing jeans and tank tops and flip-flops." And on an episode of Pod Meets World from 2024, she reiterated this by saying, "I was always the chubby-cheeked girl, and a lot of people loved that I was," she said. "And I can look back and go, like, "I was just a normal, average girl."
1996-2000: Candace Cameron Bure retreats from the spotlight as her style becomes more simple
"Full House" ended in 1995, and after that, Candace Cameron Bure continued working on her acting career. And while the teen star appeared on shows like "Boy Meets World" and "Cybill," it quickly became clear that her "Full House" fame was going to be hard to replicate. In 1996 — when she was 20 years old — Cameron Bure married Valeri Bure, and with that, she also slightly withdrew from the spotlight.
The actor's style remained simple, sporty, and comfortable, with subtle '90s accessories. Instead, the focus was often on her hairstyle, and Cameron Bure wasn't afraid to rock funky looks — from pigtails to a half updo. Speaking of hairstyles from the '90s — here are some of the most iconic ones and how to achieve them!
In 2000, Cameron Bure and her husband attended one of their first red carpets together for the ESPY Awards. "This is probably one of the first red carpet events that I went to after I stopped working and I was just raising my kids," she revealed to Cosmopolitan in 2015. "Because my husband was a professional hockey player, they asked us to go to the ESPYs. That was fun. I think I'm going braless there — a little risqué!"
2001-2004: Her style evolves with popular 2000s fashion
Once the 2000s kicked off, Candace Cameron Bure was ready for a style change. The actor embraced all that Y2K fashion had to offer — and anyone who lived through the early aughts certainly knows that there were a lot of fun trends happening. From a spiky updo to layered fashion, Cameron Bure was open to anything. And while we're on the topic of Y2K hairstyles — we also covered the most iconic ones of the decade.
One of our favorite Candace Cameron Bure fashion moments from the time was the stunning asymmetrical burgundy slip gown the actor wore to the 2002 ESPY Awards. Another one that also showcased her love for current trends was the denim miniskirt and layered top she wore for the 2004 Los Angeles premiere of "New York Minute." The movie stars Cameron Bure's former "Full House" co-stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen: two ladies who have also had a stunning style transformation! When reflecting on her look for the premiere, Cameron Bure revealed to Cosmopolitan in 2015 that her fashion choice was questionable. "This is rough! This was like a three o'clock event. I hadn't been on a red carpet in a long time because I took 10 years off from working," she admitted. "When Mary-Kate and Ashley said, 'Hey, come out to our premiere,' I did. But I called Jodie, Bob, and Dave to ask them what they're wearing, and they just said, 'Jeans, casual.' But then Mary-Kate and Ashley looked fabulous, so styled out in their Chanel and stuff. And the rest of us were in ... jeans."
2005-2009: Now embracing more sophisticated looks, Candace Cameron Bure's fashion sense matures
While Candace Cameron Bure's style in the early aughts was still very youthful, in the second half of the decade, the actor embraced a more classy and timeless look. Now, by no means are we trying to say that the star was less trendy; instead, what we noticed is that she replaced layers with silk and funky hairstyles with classic ponytails, chic blowouts, and elegant silhouettes.
"I'm a mom, so I have to be comfortable," Cameron Bure confessed to Seventeen in 2009. "Jeans are a staple — I have way too many in my closet! It's warm in Florida, so I wear jeans and a tank top every day. I love my True Religions, my Rich and Skinny, and Citizens of Humanity. But I also love getting dressed up," she added.
2010-2011: Candace Cameron Bure experiments with mixing and matching different styles
By the beginning of 2010, Candace Cameron Bure was becoming very comfortable in her style, and it was showing. Whenever the actor would appear at red-carpet events, she was always dressed in casual yet chic outfits, many of which included trends from the period.
A great example of her style at the time was the white blazer and matching shorts combo that she rocked to the 2010 VH1 Do Something Awards after party. The look was casual thanks to the shorts, yet dressy and modern because of the blazer and heels. Another look from this fashion era that is the epitome of what the actor's causal fashion looked like is the white-lace tank top and jeans she rocked to the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards in 2011. If there was one thing Cameron Bure enjoyed, it was blending chic and casual elements for industry events, allowing herself to stay true to her preference for comfort.
2012-2013: Glamour is on the menu
Between 2012 and 2013, we saw Candace Cameron Bure lean into her more glamorous side. In fact, one of our (and her) favorite looks is undoubtedly the strapless navy gown she wore to the 2012 Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards. "Yay, I have a good red carpet! This one I like," the star gushed to Cosmopolitan in 2015. "This was the Creative Emmys. I love that dress. I love this whole look — it felt clean and contemporary." While we didn't get to see the star in floor-length gowns too often, Cameron Bure still managed to add glamour to short dresses, too. In particular, it is her white-lace minidress, which she wore to the premiere of the Disney movie "Saving Mr. Banks" in 2013, that best showcased her fun and trendy style.
"I've realized that every person's life is unique and everyone's circumstances are different," Candace Cameron Bure revealed to Daily Mail in 2013. "I think that we, as women, need to stop comparing ourselves to each other and realize that what may work for me, might not work for someone else." The advice certainly applies to her fashion sense, which she always wears confidently even if it's not to everyone's taste.
2014-2015: Candace Cameron Bure leans into florals
In the mid-2010s, Candace Cameron Bure — who actively practices Christianity — spoke out about the backlash she was receiving because of some of her looks. "The most negativity I receive on FB is about my clothing and modesty," Cameron Bure wrote on her blog in 2014 (via The Christian Post). "I do realize I took a position of modesty while I was on 'Dancing with the Stars' and because of it, people are that much more attentive to everything I wear. And understandably so!" Cameron Bure participated in Season 18 of the popular dance competition.
While the actor's fashion was never too revealing, she certainly didn't stray away from showing her legs or her midriff. And during 2014 and 2015 we noticed a particular increase in floral patterns in the star's wardrobe. If you ask us, Cameron Bure has never looked more stylish — and we hope she brings her floral era back!
2016-2017: Color doesn't scare Candace Cameron Bure as she releases a book on fashion
With the second half of the 2010s kicking off, Candace Cameron Bure embraced yet another style change — this time thanks to the premiere of the sequel "Fuller House" on Netflix as well as the release of her book "Staying Stylish: Cultivating a Confident Look, Style, and Attitude." "It's the tips and the tricks that I believe have worked best for me, especially in my 30s and now in my 40s, that women can look to," the actor revealed to People in 2017. "If they're just wanting some new ideas — or maybe to step out of their comfort zone." While she has worn a lot of stunning dresses over the years, Cameron Bure also admitted that deep down, she is still a simple girl who gravitates towards the jeans-and-tee combo. "I lead a busy lifestyle, but one that can be very casual at times," the "Full House" star added. "My day could be anywhere from workout clothes to travel clothes, if I'm on a plane or if I'm in mom mode on the weekends, taking my boys to the hockey rink. But I'm definitely a Southern California, jeans and T-shirt are probably my go-tos."
With the release of her book, Cameron Bure expressed herself in even bolder fashion moments, often opting for colorful and rather short clothing pieces. To accompany her more daring style, the actor was also embracing a shorter haircut, which she even rocked in a warm chocolate for a period — showing that she can go from blond to brown seamlessly.
2018-2019: Candace Cameron Bure is all about exploring unique fashion pieces
Towards the end of the 2010s, Candace Cameron Bure leaned into edgier and rather unusual clothing pieces. While the star still enjoyed colorful dresses, she now seemed ready to explore a more high-fashion aesthetic. Two of our favorite looks representing the shift in her style include the pastel-yellow midi dress she wore to the 2018 Entertainment Weekly Pre-Emmy Party and the funky metallic pants she rocked while visiting the Build Studio in New York City in 2019.
While the former was giving high fashion, the latter was all about bringing out her inner rock goddess. Once again, Candace Cameron Bure proved that, even though she prefers comfortable styles that she is used to, she can definitely dress outside of her usual box.
2020-2021: Both casual and chic 'fits make Candace Cameron Bure look stunning
Once the new decade kicked off, Candace Cameron Bure proved that her style was anything but old-fashioned, even though she'd been in the spotlight since the '80s. In fact, the star was willing to experiment with colors and shapes, and she even gushed on Instagram about her love for fashion by saying, "Fashion and color makes me happy."
Cameron Bure also released a clothing line for QVC during this era, and while promoting it, she admitted to Access Hollywood, "There's a little modest factor with all the clothes," adding that the necklines were "just high enough so you're not all spilling out, you know, depending on what God gave you." In a conversation with People, the actor admitted that having a line was something she always dreamed of. "Clothing has been something I've wanted to do for so long," she said. "I just love fashion and I always have since I was a little girl. Partnering with QVC was a natural fit." For Women's Wear Daily, QVC vice president and general merchandise manager Rachel Ungaro revealed, "Candace Cameron Bure has an amazing eye for fashion, couple that with her wonderful community of followers who love and appreciate her authentic positivity, collaborating with Candace is a natural fit for QVC. Candace's attention to detail and her passion for creating apparel that is inclusive is harmonious with our principles."
2022-2023: Candace Cameron Bure loves an eye-catching color
In 2022 and 2023, we got to see Candace Cameron Bure embrace colors like she never had before. In fact, most of the time the actor was photographed in public, she was wearing at least one brightly colored item — and it was certainly hard to pick our favorite look from this era.
One of her best fashion moments of 2022 was definitely the look she was wearing while attending the NASCAR Cup Series in Sonoma, California, with her husband. For the occasion, Cameron Bure was looking cute but still very comfortable in her high-waisted orange pants and striped top. Needless to say, her accessories, hair, and makeup were perfect, and the star was definitely glowing from within. Our other favorite brightly colored fashion moment happened in 2023 at the premiere of "My Christmas Hero" — a movie she stars in. For the occasion, Cameron Bure decided to go with a festive holiday red as she paired pants and a top in the bright color with a matching chic coat.
2024-Present: Candace Cameron Bure has fun with youthful looks
Over the past couple of decades, we have seen Candace Cameron Bure grow up in front of our eyes, and with that, her style has changed tremendously. Even though she certainly isn't the little tween we met on "Full House" in the late '80s anymore, one thing hasn't changed: Candace Cameron Bure loves going for a youthful and fun look. Whether we're talking about the pink embellished minidress she wore to a Research Foundation event in Los Angeles or the head-to-toe red look she rocked while promoting the Great American Family channel in New York City — the fashionista was certainly taking the forefront.
Over the years, we have seen her balance between comfort and casualness on one side and elegance and glamour on the other, and today, we can confidently say that the star has managed to find a middle ground that perfectly suits her. In fact, her fans can't get enough of her look, and whenever she posts a new 'fit on social media, her posts are flooded with the approval of her following. "I need all those outfits," one fan wrote under a 2024 Instagram video of the actor showcasing her style in a collaboration with Nine West. And with 2025 just kicking off, we can't wait to see more of the actor's fun looks this year.
