The Stunning Style Transformation Of Sofía Vergara
When we think of fashionable Latin-American people in Hollywood, Sofía Vergara is certainly one of the first ones to come to mind. The Colombian actor — who moved to the United States in the late '90s after the Colombian cartel killed her brother — is known for her playfulness and resilience, both of which she tastefully packs into stunning mermaid gowns and body-hugging midis.
Over the more than two decades she has spent working in the entertainment industry, Vergara has proven, time and time again, that her beauty and style may have helped her get opportunities, but her talent as an actor is undeniable. And eventually, she got recognition, whether through her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations or her casting in a variety of different roles, one of her most talked about being Griselda Blanco in the Netflix miniseries "Griselda." But regardless of her talent and her fashion power, what makes Vergara last in the industry is the fact that she has always remained honest and down-to-earth. "I don't do brain surgery, it's just entertainment, and the worst that can happen to me is that they can say I look ugly or that this jackass doesn't know how to act," she revealed to El Paìs in 2024. "I can take it." Now, we could talk about Vergara's roles and achievements without end, but today, our sole focus is on her fashion and how her style has changed over the years!
2000-2004: Sofía Vergara enters the scene by flaunting her curves in Y2K fashion
Sofía Vergara's career in the United States began in the early aughts with minor roles in projects like "Big Trouble" and "My Wife and Kids." At the time, Vergara was still a rather unknown actor trying to have her big break. "I try to look at the careers like Penelope Cruz, Salma Hayek, Eva Mendes, Eva Longoria, who are Latins and have accents," she told Black Film in 2005. "Hopefully, I'll be able to work in movies like they do."
At the time, Vergara's style was all about Y2K fashion — low-rise bottoms and low-cut tops were among the star's go-to red-carpet pieces. Perhaps the most early 2000s look she wore was the matching top-and-skirt set she rocked on the Premios Juventud Awards red carpet in 2004. The asymmetrical hemline, the subtle peek of skin between the pieces as well as the butterfly embellishments were all staple trends of the era. Vergara was certainly on top of her fashion game, even back then!
2005-2008: The star serves us midi dresses all day, every day
Between 2005 and 2008, Sofía Vergara leaned into a more elevated and classic aesthetic, leaving behind the days of her wild Y2K fashion. Instead, the star was now all about midi dresses, which always hugged her curves perfectly. However, Vergara — who was in her mid-30s at the time — always ensured her looks were sleek but never boring.
To achieve this, the actor leaned into accessories, often pairing her midi dresses with dangly, extra-long earrings, which completed her effortless yet glamorous look. Of course, shoes and bags also played a major role in spicing her look up, and occasionally, she would throw on the now-infamous statement belt — one that served no purpose but to accessorize a look. Even though Vergara still hadn't had her big break in the industry, it became clear in the late 2000s that with the rise of her fame, her fashion influence would grow, too.
2009-2010: In stunning floor-length gowns, Sofía Vergara explores Hollywood glamour
2009 marked a major career change for Sofía Vergara as the Colombian actor was cast to portray Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in the ABC sitcom "Modern Family." The show introduced Vergara to a much wider audience, and now the events the star attended included more prestigious award shows like the American Music Awards and the Golden Globes. For Esquire, Vergara revealed that getting used to Hollywood and its beauty norms wasn't easy. "LA is crazy. The women all look the same now," she told the outlet in 2010. "That thing with the cheeks. Like Madonna. Who do they think they're fooling? It doesn't make them look young."
A fashion moment that made it clear Vergara was now entering her Hollywood-diva fashion era was undoubtedly the muted-blue gown by Carolina Herrera, which she wore to the 2010 Golden Globe Awards. Embellished with a red bow and a long train, the dress was the perfect epitome of Old Hollywood glamour, showcasing that Vergara wasn't here to play. And while we're on the topic of the Golden Globes, here are the worst-dressed celebs at the event in 2025, proving that the prestigious award show really is a fashion hit and miss.
2011-2012: Sofía Vergara gushes about bras and heels
As the early 2010s kicked off, Sofía Vergara was, in our opinion, experiencing her fashion prime. Don't get us wrong: She is still a fashion queen, but nothing will ever make us feel the same way as Vergara did at the 2012 Emmy Awards in her stunning teal Zuhair Murad mermaid dress. Not to mention that this was perhaps Vergara's sexiest era, as the star often opted for revealing cutouts that left very little to our imagination, like the Zuhair Murad black-lace gown she wore to the 2011 Vanity Fair Oscar Party.
In 2011, Vergara revealed that when it comes to her outfits, the right bra and the right heels play a major role. "I'm always in search of the perfect bra," the actor said (via People). "I'll find one, wear it for a long time, and they'll discontinue it. It's the story of my life!" Similarly, she also revealed that heels are a must for her. "It's like a little immediate plastic surgery; immediate liposuction," the star said, adding that statement earrings are also a great way to "distract from any imperfections." Now, if Vergara's fashion tips intrigued you, here's how to wisely build up your bra collection, as well as how to choose heels, according to your foot shape. With these tips, you'll feel as glamorous as Vergara in no time!
2013- 2014: Mermaid dresses are still Sofía Vergara's favorite
In 2013, Sofía Vergara wowed us all with her stunning red Vera Wang dress at the Emmy Awards. Speaking with Glamour, the Hollywood star revealed some details behind the look. "This time I didn't use a stylist," Vergara admitted. "I knew I wanted to wear red, and Vera offered to make me two gowns. We played with swatches of material and discussed the design and how much cleavage we wanted to show. She created this for what I had in mind." By now, it became evident that the actor was fond of the mermaid silhouette, which she would usually pick for red-carpet events. "Why would I go away from what looks good on me? I've tried a million other shapes, and this is the one I always go back to. It's important to know what looks good on you," Vergara added.
In a candid conversation with Harper's Bazaar, the star revealed that for her, looking put together is something that comes with being Colombian. "I'm Latin; I do it no matter what. It's automatic," she said in 2013. "I shower, do hair and makeup. For me, it's like shaving. I don't believe in a natural look. Lipstick brightens your face! Unless you're Gisele Bündchen or 19, you need something," the star added. Vergara continued portraying the iconic Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on small screens, even admitting that she learned something about style from her. "Don't be afraid of animal print," Vergara told PopSugar in 2014. Here at Glam, we've been preaching that animal prints are the new neutrals — so we totally agree with Gloria on this one!
2015: Sofía Vergara embraces the power of red
After all the love Sofía Vergara's 2013 Emmy gown received, the actor seemingly leaned into wearing red more often — and nobody was complaining. Vergara always looked stunning in rich and vibrant red hues throughout 2015, and the Donna Karan gown she wore to the Screen Actors Guild Awards that year looked absolutely perfect on her.
Now in her early 40s, Vergara was very open about aging in the industry. "I hate being old. Whatever woman in her 40s that tells you she doesn't care, they're lying," the star said in 2015 (via Independent). The actor also added that her style is very much a result of her upbringing in Latin America. "I was born in my little push-up bra," Vergara joked. "For me sexy is something that I never really thought about until I moved to the United States, because in Latin America, everybody goes to the beach with a G-string and you are always in high heels and makeup. It's just our day-to-day thing."
2016: She reveals that shapewear is a red-carpet staple for her
By the second half of the 2010s, Sofía Vergara's red-carpet looks were as iconic as her roles. And while the star always dresses up her curves to perfection, she also remained transparent about what role shapewear plays in her fashion. "I know my body: It's very voluptuous ..." the actor admitted in 2016 (via Elle), adding that she wears a 32DDD bra size. "... and because they're real, they're everywhere, so I need my dresses to have structure — and under armor. There is so much going on under my dresses that I bleed at the end of award ceremonies," Vergara added.
Regardless of what prestigious event she was attending, Vergara always looked perfectly together, making her one of the most highly anticipated celebs on any red carpet. Two of the best 2016 Sofía Vergara fashion moments include her dramatic dark-blue Marchesa gown as well as the fresh and modern Versace dress she wore to the Emmys. However — despite being objectively gorgeous — Vergara continued being open about her relationship with aging, which was something she was still coming to terms with. "Watching myself age on screen is awful," she admitted, per E! News. "There is nothing more disturbing than watching an episode of 'Modern Family' from the first season, then one from seven years later."
2017: Sofía Vergara goes for sparkly haute couture
2017 was a fabulous fashion year for Sofía Vergara as the actor leaned more into glitter, sparkles, and metallic materials. Of course, dressing head to toe in gold or silver can quickly look too over the top, but Vergara's choices were always dramatic and chic — and most of all, they perfectly suited her bubbly and loud personality. For the annual Vanity Fair Oscar Party, Vergara decided to wow everyone in a slightly see-through metallic Michael Kors dress that not many could pull off. Similarly, for the Golden Globes that year, the "Modern Family" star went with a Zuhair Murad Couture gown made out of sheer material with gold and silver embellishments. Once again — imagining anyone else pulling this look off as effortlessly as Vergara does is difficult.
In 2017, the star also opened up about how her own beauty standards were set by watching the women in her family daily. "I remember watching my mom and aunt get ready to go out, and falling in love with the process of putting on makeup and perfume," she admitted (via Today). "Growing up, I learned never to leave the house without mascara. I think all the Vergara women would agree it's important to look your best at all times."
2018-2019: Platform heels are life for Sofía Vergara
Towards the end of the 2010s, Sofía Vergara was known for her perfectly put-together looks, regardless of whether the star was seen at an industry event or simply photographed while running errands. One thing about her style that we noticed during this time was that Vergara was all about platform heels that added a bit of extra height. No matter if she was wearing a glamorous dress or ripped jeans, a pair of platform heels was what the actor usually rocked with them. Now, if you haven't tried rocking this type of shoe yet, here are the best ways to incorporate platform shoes into your wardrobe.
In 2019, Vergara ventured into the world of fashion even more by partnering with Walmart for a denim collection called Sofía Jeans by Sofía Vergara. "Walmart targets the people who I want to target, which are real people who don't spend $300 on a pair of jeans," she told Hello Giggles in 2019. "I named [The Sofìa Jean from the collection] after myself because they're the jeans that I always wear. It's a jean that looks upscale, but it's very affordable and it fits everybody beautifully. It's not too long, and not too short, and it comes in different washes." The star also added that jeans are an important part of her wardrobe, as they can be rocked for a variety of looks. "I'm always trying to be very glamorous," Vergara admitted. "I think that's the great thing about jeans. Even if you're overdone with makeup and you throw on a top and high heels, you've got yourself a whole look. Or if you wear no makeup with jeans, that works too. That's the beauty of jeans."
2020-2021: Sofía Vergara continues going for fashion that hugs her curves perfectly
During the COVID-19 years, Sofía Vergara still managed to wow us with glamour and fashion. Our favorite look from this era is undoubtedly the bedazzled Dolce & Gabbana gown she wore for the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. In a 2021 interview with E! News, Vergara revealed that Sophia Loren was her style icon "because she was always sophisticated but still glamorous," and that "Dolce & Gabbana, Amina Muaddi, Saint Laurent and Etro" were her favorite designers.
During the pandemic, Vergara released a glasses collection with Foster Grant, and to People, she opened up about what made her venture into that. "When I turned 40, 41, 42, I started losing my sight. It's the normal thing that happens at that age," she said. "I refused to wear glasses because I felt old. I was like, 'No, I'm going to hold it. I don't need them. I don't need them.'" However, Vergara still needed glasses, so the star decided that if she couldn't find cute ones, she was going to design them herself. "We're going to have to use them no matter what at this age, so at least use something that makes you look cute, not like you're the little grandma," the "Modern Family" star added.
Vergara's jeans collaboration with Walmart proved to be a major success, and for The Hollywood Reporter, she revealed just what made the jeans so desirable. "We use great materials and design the clothes with women's bodies in mind," the actor said. "It was so important to me for Sofía Jeans to be size-inclusive so that women of all shapes and proportions could wear cool, flattering, affordable looks that make them feel beautiful."
2022-2023: She embraces pants more frequently
Once the pandemic ended and life went back to normal (more or less), we noticed a subtle change in Sofía Vergara's style. Now, while we're only speculating, we think that it may have been the comfort of wearing cozy clothing (a.k.a. sweatpants) during lockdown that has caused the actor to embrace pants more frequently. After all, Vergara was known for her tight midi dresses, but now we got to see her more often in fancy pants, which definitely allowed her to be more comfortable and have a bigger range of movement. Anyone who has rocked a figure-hugging midi dress knows that your steps are very limited while wearing it.
While there are many to choose from, our favorite pants moment that Vergara has served us thus far has to be the stunning strapless Nadine Merabi jumpsuit and matching blazer, which the actor wore to the Albie Awards in 2023. The sparkles that gave the look a celestial touch and the addition of the statement earrings are what made this outfit very much Sofía Vergara-esque!
2024-Present: Sofía Vergara continues having fun with fashion
Today, Sofía Vergara is known just as much for her glamorous clothing as she is for her vibrant and humorous personality. And when it comes to her career, the actor has always known that her beauty was an asset she could use to ensure everybody eventually recognizes her talent. "My giant boobs and my body opened doors for me; they were my passport to the world when I was 20 years old when I started as a model, but today I'm 51 years old and I'm still here," she told El País in 2024. " ... I'm still around because I have demonstrated that I can stay," she added. "From a very young age, I've known my strengths and I've played to them. But if you only see my boobs, then that's your problem."
In 2024, Vergara was all about leaning into edgier looks and exploring fashion which we hadn't seen her rock as much before. With age, she gained a new confidence, and that is what makes the star look more stunning than ever. And Vergara kicked off 2025 with a major fashion moment: a sparkly black mermaid dress by Georges Chakra — undoubtably one of the best looks of the Golden Globes. As she is confidently walking through her 50s, we can't wait to see just how Sofía Vergara's style evolves further!
