Clothing Color Combinations That Age You And What To Wear To Look Younger
We all dress to impress and much of that has to do with styling your clothes, rather than just wearing them. That means knowing which color combinations go well together, as certain pairings can make you look older. Not all of us were born with an innate fashion sense, but thankfully, we have fashion expert John Smith to nudge us in the right direction. As vice president of design at Poshéle, a USA-based fashion house known for redefining modern style with a timeless approach, Smith told Glam exclusively that going for monochromatic pieces in beiges and browns — while chic — will add years to your look. Smith also advised fashionistas to stay away from combining purple and green together, as well as bright pink and orange. "These pairings feel dated, reminiscent of the '60s and '70s. The vibrant ones like purple and green create a jarring and overly 'loud' effect that can make you look older than you are," he warned.
For a more youthful aesthetic, Smith noted that neutrals go well with primary colors like red, blue, and yellow. He added, "Deep jewel tones like emerald green, sapphire blue, and ruby red can make you look young without that dated feel. Or, you can go for soft pastels like blush pink, baby blue, and mint green; [these] can create a romantic and youthful look." And, if you're into exploring fashion rules that are made to be broken, try pairing olive green and blush pink, coral and ivory, or blue and mustard yellow. While these color combinations are super fun, you might just not be into them. If you're set on a monochromatic palette, Smith has tips on how to style your clothing so that you look your best.
How to style clothing combinations that age you
We love a good neutral monochromatic moment, but wearing only one color all over can make you look older. Instead, John Smith's advice is to combine two different colors with enough contrast, like gray and beige. "Also, play with textures to create some distinction," Smith told Glam. "For instance, a beige ribbed sweater looks great with a beige leather skirt, but your heels or boots should be dark brown or black to stylishly break the monotony." And, when in doubt, accessorize. Feel like your OOTD looks drabby? Smith suggested adding flair to your look with a bright scarf or a statement necklace to make it the focus of your outfit.
It's not just color combinations you need to be cognizant of. Our fashion expert pointed out that silhouettes can make or break a look. "A flowy maxi dress with a purple-and-green floral print or a fitted jumpsuit in a bright-pink and orange combination can work, but amp up your accessory game by choosing sophisticated jewelry, handbags, and heels," he shared exclusively with us. It's worth noting that your skin undertone matters, so be sure to figure out if you're cool, warm, or neutral and dress accordingly so that your clothing combinations don't clash with your coloring.
