The Dramatic Hair Transformation Of Emma Stone

As someone who has been in the industry for over two decades, Emma Stone has rocked a variety of haircuts and hairstyles. The star, who's known to be loyal to hairstylist Mara Roszak and colorist Tracey Cunningham, is certainly one of the few Hollywood actors who dares to dramatically switch up their hair every now and then.

Whether you prefer her with platinum-blond locks or you adore the "Easy A" actor with her natural-looking copper tresses, the star has managed to reinvent her hair over and over. And even though 2025 has only just begun, Stone has already taken a step ahead of everyone by kicking the year off with an unexpected new haircut, which she debuted at the Golden Globes on Sunday, January 5. But before we get to that, let's take a journey down memory lane to see just how much the star's hair has changed over the years in the lead up to her big Golden Globes moment.

Emma Stone kicked her career off in the mid-2000s with guest roles in shows like "Medium" and "Malcolm in the Middle." At the time, Stone was a teenager who was embracing popular early-aughts trends, including straight-across blunt bangs. The talented newcomer had long, brown hair and sleek bangs that touched her eyelashes. "At the time, when she was around 17 or 18, she was already experienced in coloring her hair — it's naturally blonde, but she was coloring it this sort of murky brown color at that time," Stone's colorist, Tracey Cunningham, reflected to Refinery29 in 2018.

Of course, at the time, this hairstyle was super popular, and nobody really cared about the importance of eyebrows and how they can frame your eyes. Instead, straight bangs with long hair and a middle part were all the rage, and if you looked like you could barely see through them, you had mastered the look. Stone looked adorable with the hairstyle, and while we love the star with her signature copper tone — after all, she's one of the red-haired celebs who make us want to try the flaming-hot look — we have to say that she totally pulls off brunette strands. 

By the late 2000s, Emma Stone was becoming a well-known name in the industry thanks to roles in projects like "Superbad" and "Zombieland." This period was when many people first heard of the beautifully red-haired actor, who was always rocking side-swept bangs with a diagonal side part.

In fact, because many of us got introduced to Stone during this time, there's a common misconception that the actor naturally has red hair. However, the star actually has blond locks. "I always tell people that one of the biggest reasons why Emma's hair looks so incredible red is because she looks like a redhead," Tracey Cunningham explained to Refinery29 in 2018. "Despite the fact that her natural color is blonde, the red suits her so well. It's a unique case, because almost everyone in Emma's family has red hair except her. I think there's something about those genetics that make the red shade look so gorgeous with her skin tone and her eyes — it's just a look that she can pull off exquisitely." Fascinating, right?

By the early 2010s, Emma Stone had established herself as a serious Hollywood actor thanks to movies like "Crazy, Stupid, Love" and "The Help." Almost as if to signify her career growth and undeniable change from a comedy star to a critically acclaimed actor, Stone changed her hair color, ditching her signature red locks for a light-blond shade. "I'm so white. My hair grows out blonde, but my coloring is similar to that of a redhead," Stone told Refinery29 in 2012. "So...I really like having red hair. I'm a natural blonde, but I really like the red."

While the star's hair has always looked perfectly put-together when spotted out and about, Stone has admitted that styling her own hair is very difficult for her, especially when she has short bangs. "I am so bad at my own hair. I have no idea how to do it. It's really not fun," Stone added to Refinery29. "The only days that I'm like 'I'm so into my bangs!' are days that I've had my hair done."

Even though Stone has served us quite a few different hair looks over the years, the actor revealed to Glamour in 2012 that getting hair trims isn't something that's often on her mind. "I try to get trims every once and a while when I remember but I usually don't remember for, like, 6 months," the star told the outlet. "I'm not great about my hair. And I have, like, feathers where hair should be! It's really really fine."

By the mid-2010s, Emma Stone was a force to be reckoned with. In 2015, the star was nominated for her first-ever Academy Award for her performance in "Birdman," and in 2017, she took the prestigious Oscar statuette home for her performance in the 2016 hit "La La Land." Once again, with the shift in her career, Stone opted for a noticeable hair change, this time going for a copper shade of red and a chic bob haircut. While the darker red she rocked in the late 2000s looked beautiful on her, this copper tone is the right shade of red hair for Stone if you ask us.

"We very rarely set up actual times to cut her hair—it's more often that I'll be there for an event or a shoot," Stone's hairstylist, Mara Roszak, revealed to InStyle in 2015 (via Yahoo! Beauty). "She's always got stuff going on. Sometimes I'll send her photos, and sometimes she'll send me ones." The hairstylist revealed that the 2014 change in haircut was a decision they came to together. "That one was mutual, for sure," Roszak added. "It had been something that we had talked about for a little while and then finally did right before Cabaret during the winter," the stylist explained, referring to Stone's Broadway debut. "The short hair was perfectly suited for all of the dancing." While Stone's bob eventually grew out into a lob, the hairstyle, which the actor usually styled in a deep side part, still suited her perfectly.

Even though Emma Stone had already rocked blond locks a few years prior, it wasn't until 2017 that she dared to step into icy, platinum-blond territory. Still styled in her signature wavy bob with a deep side part, the actor sported the new look at many events, including the U.S. Open Tennis Championships and the AFI Life Achievement Award Gala.

In early 2017, while Stone's hair was still copper, hairstylist Mara Roszak revealed how the nonchalant yet perfectly placed waves are created. "It's almost like sculpting when you're creating the wave shape," Roszak told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's really about working with your hands and the brush to make the hair do what you want it to do. As long as you have the curl set, it just takes some hand-sculpting." Clearly, she still used that technique on Stone once she went blond that year because her waves remained perfect despite the color change.

Between 2018 and 2020, Emma Stone went back to the hair color that most of us associate with her: copper red. Speaking to Refinery29 in 2018, colorist Tracey Cunningham revealed just what color is used on the star. "Because Emma is very blonde naturally, the color is tricky to get right," Cunningham told the outlet. "The secret to her red is the Redken Shade EQ gloss. That color gloss is amazing because it feels like a conditioner, but it actually stains the hair." Of course, hair color can come across differently based on how it's styled, and Cunningham knows that, adding, "I have to credit her longtime hair stylist Mara Roszak, because her cut and the way her hair is styled makes a huge difference in the way the color reads."

One of Stone's most memorable hairstyles from this era was the one she rocked to the premiere of "The Favourite" in 2018. Styled in loose waves and accessorized with a delicate, embellished headband, the look perfectly accentuated Stone's dark lips and metallic gown. "[The headband] was the perfect piece for the overall look – modern, but with a nod towards the period of the film," Roszak told Harper's Bazaar. 

While Stone has always been one to try new hair colors and styles, we have to note that the star doesn't often jump on hair trends just because they're popular. In fact, it was during the late 2010s that Gen Z encouraged the shift from the side part to the middle part, but Stone and her hairstylist couldn't be bothered to change her signature parting. And for this, we applaud her. After all, when it comes to the side part vs. middle part debate, everyone has to decide which looks better on their hair.

While Emma Stone has always switched between a short bob and mid-length hair, it wasn't until 2021 that we actually got to see the actor with very-long locks. Could the COVID pandemic — and the mandatory social distancing that came with it — be the main reason the star's hair ended up growing so long? We can't say for certain, but it's a possibility. Even though we adore Stone with short hair, we have to say that her super-long locks from this era added some extra, gorgeous glamour to the star.

For the premiere of "Cruella," hairstylist Mara Roszak decided to embrace the star's natural hair texture while showing off the length of her locks. "Her hair has a slight natural wave that I like to enhance. It's long, absolutely gorgeous and healthy," Roszak told People at the time. While Stone kept the copper undertones of her hair, she added lots of dimension to it via subtle highlights that perfectly enhanced her waves.

It was only a matter of time before Emma Stone got bored of her long locks, and in 2023, the star once again decided to chop the length off by going for the, if you ask us, chicest take on short hair: the Italian bob. Simultaneously, the star gave platinum blond another season, making her hair change even more dramatic.

Speaking to Vogue at the time, hairstylist Mara Roszak explained how to achieve the style. "When asking for a chin-length bob, know that the cut should be a tiny touch longer in the front for subtle dimension," she said. "Emma just went bleach blonde, so this was the perfect time for a cut to give her a healthy refresh." While the star remained loyal to her side part, she also explored what a middle-part bob has to offer, showing us that she can just as easily pull off the popular trend. 

Once again, colorist Tracey Cunningham was in charge of the bleaching. "I call it 'super blonde,'" Cunningham told People in 2023. "She just shot three huge movies in a row and at some point, you want to look like yourself," the colorist added, referring to "Kinds of Kindness," "Cruella," and "Poor Things."

The year 2024 marked Emma Stone's "vamp goddess" era — a term coined by hairstylist Mara Roszak in an Instagram post from June that year. While promoting the movie "Poor Things," the star leaned into the dark-espresso hair color, showing us once again that there truly doesn't seem to be a shade that the star can't pull off. If there is such a thing as a true hair chameleon, Stone might be the closest thing we've witnessed to one.

While Stone kept her hair on the shorter side, she did allow her 2023 bob to grow into an effortless lob that barely touched her shoulders when worn in subtle waves. Switching between a side part and a middle part, Stone ensured she kept her hairstyle unexpected and interesting, and by now, we were sure that 2025 Stone was going to bring us something fresh and new.

While countless stars attended the 2025 Golden Globes, Emma Stone singlehandedly stole the spotlight when she showed up on the red carpet. The star, who has been rocking a bob for most of her career, went for a bold change by chopping it all off. And when we say "all," we pretty much mean it, as Stone walked the carpet with a fun and fresh pixie haircut.

"It's been growing out, and it's looking so stunning — very nineties in that nostalgic way," hairstylist Mara Roszak revealed to Allure the day of the event, adding that '90s stars like Winona Ryder and Liv Tyler were some of the inspiration behind the chop. "There's always a little bit of cleanup work you want to do," the hairstylist added. "The prep is really in the cut. The smallest tweak can make the biggest difference." 

As for the color, it was once again Tracey Cunningham's magic. "It's auburn, a smidge darker than her usual color," Cunningham told the outlet. "We did a gloss on it for 20 minutes, then we gave her Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner." And now that Stone has kicked off the pixie hair trend for 2025, we can't help but wonder which celebs will follow in her footsteps.
