The Worst Celebrity Halloween Costumes Of 2024
In recent years, celebrities have really set the bar high for Halloween costumes that shock, delight, and stand the test of time. For instance, model and TV personality Heidi Klum stands out as "The Queen of Halloween" for her regularly jaw-dropping spooky-season looks (sorry, Elvira!), and while her intensive E.T. costume may have been slightly upstaged this year — by strange coincidence, actor and singer Janelle Monáe had unveiled her own take on the extraterrestrial a few days prior — we tip our hats to every A-lister who puts in the effort to bring big concepts to life. This Halloween, that roster even includes Kim Kardashian, who eschewed her usually glam-heavy looks for a disquieting albino alligator costume.
Of course, not all star-studded outfits are instant winners, as we can recall from living through the worst celebrity Halloween costumes of 2023. Unfortunately, it seems that 2024 is no exception to this rule, with some public figures disappointing in 'fits that were predictable, sloppy, or borderline offensive.
Taylor Hill was a forgettable party host in her witchy wardrobe
Actor and model Taylor Hill, who's also a former Victoria's Secret angel, had the chance to show off while hosting Jinx Dog Food's 2024 Howl-o-ween Pawty, so we were a little disappointed that the beauty played it safe with a simple witch costume. The lace-trimmed garments, complete with sheer panels and tulle accents, created a dainty take on spooky vibes. And while Hill looked gorgeous, it ultimately added up to an unmemorable ensemble.
Patti Harrison showed poor taste as Michael Jackson
Comedians aren't the type to run from controversy, but jokester Patti Harrison might've misstepped with her Michael Jackson costume this Halloween. Not only did the choice for a non-Black person to dress as a Black man raise eyebrows but Harrison also recreated Jackson from a very specific moment — that time when the pop star dangled his infant son over a balcony in 2002. Ultimately, this look was a wild choice, with one user on X, formerly known as Twitter, already asking, "Where were you when you found out about Patti Harrison's Michael Jackson costume?"
Anne Hathaway looked sloppy as Boo York City
Iconic "Princess Diaries" actor Anne Hathaway deserves to appear on best-of lists for the concept behind her 2024 Halloween costume, Boo York City, and we don't even mind the poppy, homemade look of her 'fit. But the makeup is a cheap, Party City mess that demands one question: Why? We don't know whether that's grease or cream Halloween makeup, but A-listers like Hathaway have access to the best MUAs in the business, so there's no reason to leave the house with this kind of sloppy get-up. Mia Thermopolis would never.
Ava Max was predictably pretty as Alice in Wonderland
"Sweet but Psycho" singer Ava Max committed a cardinal Halloween sin this year by delivering a boring costume. Did she look great? Of course, and we're sure that was the whole point — fishnets and pinafores are easy shortcuts to a flirty spooky-season 'fit. But there's nothing memorable about a cutesy Disney character at Halloween. The only thing that could make such an obvious costume worse is if another celebrity did it better, but maybe no one will notice that Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco really hit Wonderland out of the park this year.
Nicola Peltz Beckham's bunny costume was neither a trick nor a treat
In a time when so many stars are really getting creative and pushing Halloween boundaries, Nicola Peltz Beckham offered another sexy snooze-fest by dressing up as a Playboy bunny. While the "Bates Motel" actor always looks good with blond locks, the simplicity of the look left a lot to be desired. Was it timely, daring, or unexpected? No, no, and no. Regardless of what led Peltz Beckham to choose this costume, we hope she puts a little more thought into it next year.
Sophie Turner wasn't 'The One' as Trinity from The Matrix
Sophie Turner's style has been serving post-Joe Jonas divorce, but we weren't wowed by the "Game of Thrones" star's turn as Trinity from "The Matrix." Maybe it was the unnecessary choice to take Trinity's already sexy patent-leather ensemble and truncate it into booty shorts, or maybe it's that Turner lazily swept her long, strawberry locks into a slicked-back bun rather than mimicking the original look's short, dark hair. Ultimately, this Halloween disguise just didn't inspire us to take the red pill.
Elz the Witch underwhelmed with two different costumes
Popular gaming YouTuber Elz the Witch has earned a big following for her online content, but in our opinion, she failed to impress this Halloween season. Elz dressed as a classic (read: "basic") devil for the Kiss Haunted House Party on October 30, then doubled down on simplistic costumes by cosplaying as Blossom from "The Powerpuff Girls" the next day. In what seems to be a recurring theme for this year's worst looks, Elz looked cute but boring. Who's going to remember either of these costumes next week, much less next year?
Nicole Scherzinger put in minimum effort as Norma Desmond
We love that Nicole Scherzinger chose something a little gory and dark for her outing at Heidi Klum's 23rd Annual Halloween Party this year. However, we can't help but knock the Pussycat Dolls alum for taking the easiest of easy roads — the look is, beat for beat, from her costume rack for the Broadway show "Sunset Boulevard." That's right, Scherzinger simply raided her professional wardrobe to appear as the musical's doomed antagonist, Norma Desmond. Is that cheating? It feels like cheating.
Kelsey Anderson missed the point as Belle
At Halloween, taking a concept and dialing its flirtiness up to 11 is fairly standard practice, but we'd argue that some costumes just aren't made to be sexy. Take, for example, "The Bachelor" Season 28 winner Kelsey Anderson's attempt at portraying Belle from Disney's "Beauty and the Beast." Yes, Belle had a beautiful gown, which Anderson cropped into a fairly uninteresting thigh-high accented miniskirt, but she was also a deep thinker who wanted to be appreciated for her mind. Maybe that's why seeing a "sexy Belle" costume just feels wrong on every level.
Charli D'Amelio and Monet McMichael went head-to-head and both lost
Nobody wants to attend a high-profile party wearing the same outfit. Unfortunately, both social media star Charli D'Amelio and YouTuber Monet McMichael showed up to Heidi Klum's Halloween bash dressed as Natalie Portman's character from the 2010 film "Black Swan." It's unclear why this costume was apparently so trendy this year — did we miss something? — but the real death knell for this duo was that another set of guests outshone them both: For our money, gymnast Suni Lee and her sister, Shyenne, presented the best "Black Swan" look of the night.
