The Worst-Dressed Stars At The 2024 Academy Museum Gala

The 2024 Academy Museum Gala was a star-studded event that plenty of A-listers knew they couldn't miss. While the event — which took place at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in LA and raised $11 million — was a major success, it was the red carpet that will remain in our memory for quite a while. Unfortunately, that's not only because of the stylish and jaw-dropping looks, but also because of the outrageous and unbelievable fashion misses it gave us.

Some have gambled a bit too much with their choices, while others haven't gambled enough. But hey, it's nice to see that even those who have plenty of wealth and all the biggest brands and stylists at their disposal can still look like an awkward and very unfashionable mess. Are we salty that they get to live their best, lavish lives? Perhaps. But are we also actually happy that, at the end of the day, a fashion faux pas is what makes these stars more relatable? Absolutely. And luckily for us, there were quite a few relatable queens of the 2024 Academy Museum Gala!

Aubrey Plaza's dress was bad enough without the bows

Actor and sarcasm queen Aubrey Plaza must have chosen her 2024 Academy Museum Gala gown as a joke. The sheer Miu Miu creation had delicately placed embellishments that covered almost nothing, but it was the pink bows placed just above her hip bones that took this ensemble from kind of acceptable to absolutely grotesque. We love you, Aubrey, and if this was meant to be a parody of the fashion industry, we applaud you.

Kim Kardashian should have committed to the bit and ditched the robe

Reality star Kim Kardashian is known for her edgy style that is often either a hit or a miss. As someone who has come a long way in fashion and even has quite a few useful style secrets to share, her reputation precedes her, and we have to admit that we were rather disappointed by her 2024 Academy Museum Gala fashion moment. The vintage Mugler corset bodysuit isn't everyone's cup of tea, but we don't actually hate it. However, the robe looked odd because Kardashian didn't use its hood, which completely changes the entire vibe. Kim, darling, you know better than to half-commit to a look!

Zoe Saldaña's dress looked a bit too DIY-ed

If we didn't know better, we might just think that actor Zoe Saldaña actually DIY-ed her 2024 Academy Museum Gala gown herself. However, the piece is by Harris Reed, and we really don't have much to say in its defense. We don't know what is happening in the front, and we have no idea how this outfit passed anyone's approval. The only explanation that we have is that there is a very fine line between a genius avant-garde fashion moment and a complete fashion flop.

Ayo Edebiri's look was almost great — but something was off

Even though some might disagree, we ended up including actor Ayo Edebiri's dress on the list, too. We love a daring queen, and Edebiri certainly made a statement with Thom Browne Couture, but between the half skirt and dramatic hip enhancers, the silhouette of the gown got a bit lost. If you ask us, had they kept the hip area normal, this would have been an incredible hit!

Pamela Anderson's dress was way too dark for her features

It pains our hearts to mention makeup-free beauty Pamela Anderson, but her 2024 Academy Museum Gala outfit could have been so much better. Yes, the silhouette of her simple The Row gown is pretty basic and boring, but we actually have a problem with its color. Now, hear us out: We love that the actor has decided to ditch makeup and embrace her natural beauty, but the black gown ended up being a bit too much of a contrast with her light features. Had the dress been in a muted blush or even sage green, this would have been a stunning choice.

Kerry Washington's choice was pretty outdated but not yet vintage

Fashion of the 2010s is currently stuck in that weird phase where it is outdated, but not yet old enough to be vintage and cool. This is precisely why actor Kerry Washington and her Carolina Herrera dress need to be mentioned. Between the high-low hemline and the dramatic floral print, this choice would have served in 2014 — but in 2024, not so much.

Kylie Jenner's look definitely proves that she is Kim K's sister

Reality star and makeup mogul Kylie Jenner is known for her daring and skintight looks, but her 2024 Academy Museum Gala choice was definitely a questionable one. Just like her sister Kim Kardashian, Jenner hoped to make a dramatic statement with a vintage Mugler piece, but her choice ended up being a bit predictable. Besides, the hip cutouts are a trend we will never get behind; they always look odd! Since she began dating Timothée Chalamet, the star's style has changed quite a bit, but this look definitely makes us wonder whether they ended things ...

Reneé Rapp's bolero is a Y2K trend nobody wants to see

Musician and actor Reneé Rapp is known for her edgy and unapologetic looks, which is why we're a tad surprised she decided to go with a sheer early aughts-like bolero for her 2024 Academy Museum Gala look. We adore the slip dress, the shoes, the jewelry, and most of all, the hair and makeup — but the bolero ended up being a very distracting and unnecessary addition.

Jessica Biel's choice of dress looked like something we would have seen 10 years ago

Just like Kerry Washington, actor Jessica Biel also suffered from the outdated outfit moment. For the 2024 Academy Museum Gala, she decided to go with a Balmain dress that combined all the trends of the early 2010s — the ultra-high thigh slit, the one-shoulder silhouette, and of course, the metallic detailing. Biel didn't look bad by any means, but we wouldn't necessarily call this a great fashion moment.

Cara Delevingne's dress couldn't be more boring

We get it — celebs attend so many events throughout the year that finding interesting pieces to wear all of them can't be easy. However, we also know that most celebs have access to incredible stylists, and whoever helped model Cara Delevingne get ready for the 2024 Academy Museum Gala should, well ... we hate to say it, but get fired. Red carpets like this one are meant to be fun and fashion-forward, and Delevingne's Celine minidress is a choice that's way too safe.

Chrissy Teigen's hip moment was one we could have done without

Model Chrissy Teigen is no stranger to unusual fashion silhouettes, and we admire her brave approach to style. However, sometimes, it also backfires, and her 2024 Academy Museum Gala dress by Andrew Kwon is a look we had to include. Hip embellishments seem to be a major trend recently, but they are definitely difficult to execute. And Teigen's wing-like addition is certainly not a good example of how to do it.
