Princess Beatrice's Most Inappropriate Outfits
While she may not be in the spotlight quite as much as her cousins, William, Prince of Wales, and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, Princess Beatrice of York is just as much a part of the royal family as her famous relatives. As such, the princess has been in the public eye since her birth. She and her sister Princess Eugenie are the daughters of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson and, of course, the nieces of King Charles III. Yet, just because someone has royal blood and all the privilege associated with the crown, that doesn't mean that they automatically look their best for every occasion and never make a fashion misstep. And, over the years, Beatrice has certainly proven this to be true.
Everyone goes on a fashion journey throughout their lives. How many of us have the same style today that we did in high school? And, a growing and evolving fashion sense is a great thing. Yet, when the paparazzi pays attention to your every move throughout your life, no bad outfit you wear outside of your house is exempt from criticism. Beatrice has worn quite a few inappropriate outfits in her lifetime, and many of them have been photographed and become the talk of the town. Let's take a look at those fashion moments of this usually stylish royal that have been deemed the most inappropriate.
Stealing the spotlight from the Prince and Princess of Wales
Over the years, Princess Beatrice has worn both good and not-so-good looks. Yet, a list of her most inappropriate ensembles can start in no other way than with her most infamous fashion infraction. No matter who you are or what wedding you're attending, stealing the spotlight away from the happy couple is one of the ultimate no-no moves. Not only did Beatrice and her sister Princess Eugenie make this classic mistake, but they managed to steal the spotlight at one of the biggest wedding events of the decade. In 2011, William, Prince of Wales, and Catherine, Princess of Wales, tied the knot in an extravagant royal wedding. Yet, Beatrice's headpiece was also extravagant — and not in a good way.
It's difficult to forget the hat Beatrice sported, which perfectly matched with her dusty-rose ensemble. Its unique, structural shape was unusual and eye-catching — perhaps a bit too eye-catching for someone else's wedding. Unfortunately, her sister Eugenie's outfit made matters even worse. Her all-blue look also included a matching hat, and together, the sisters looked particularly attention-grabbing, earning them plenty of criticism and more than a few memorable "wicked stepsister" references in the media.
Not blending in with Princess Eugenie's bridal party
Whether you're a royal or not, wedding attire etiquette is important and particular, and this makes for ample opportunity to look inappropriate when attending a loved one's nuptials. Consequently, the nuptials of William and Catherine, Prince and Princess of Wales, wasn't the only time Princess Beatrice made a major fashion misstep at a royal wedding. Years later, she was a bridesmaid at Princess Eugenie's wedding to Jack Brooksbank, and her attire earned mixed reactions.
Beatrice attended the 2018 nuptials in a bold-blue skirt and matching jacket by Ralph & Russo. Without any added context, Beatrice looked sophisticated, and the color complemented her beautifully. Yet, much of the public raised an eyebrow at her choice to not coordinate with Eugenie's other bridesmaids. It's unclear whether this choice was approved by Eugenie, but it's safe to assume that it was. After all, Beatrice is the bride's only sister. And, while it may not be common among royal family members, it's certainly not uncommon for brides to ask that their maid of honor wear something different from the rest of the bridal party. Still, this fact did not stop folks from gossiping about Beatrice's apparent wedding fashion faux pas, accusing her once again of stealing the spotlight from the bride and being inappropriately dressed for somebody else's wedding.
When she bared her legs at a funeral
Dressing appropriately at a funeral is of the utmost importance, but the rules aren't usually particularly hard to follow. The ideal ensemble varies based on culture, religion, and style of the ceremony. Yet, for many funerals in the U.K., wearing black and dark colors is the biggest non-negotiable rule. When Prince Philip died in 2021, it was a major event for the royal family. Of course, for Princess Beatrice, it was more personal; it was a time to honor her late grandfather. Her ensemble for the occasion was black, but that doesn't mean that the public was entirely pleased with her funeral attire. She was missing one key accessory: tights.
Tights are great for staying warm, making your fave minidress appropriate for fall and winter, and adding a chic or cozy twist to some cold-weather looks. But, they certainly don't make or break respectful funeral wear; right? Well, in Beatrice's case, it seems that they did. Despite dressing in all black, and sporting a dress and coat, both of which landed slightly below the knee, she did not pair the outfit with black tights. Other royal ladies layered their dark-colored funeral looks with tights — a custom expected of if not enforced on British royal women — and folks viewed the act of not rocking bare calves to be much more respectful for the occasion.
Her bedazzled Christmas boots
If there's any time of year that is particularly fitting to be utterly bejeweled, it simply must be the holiday season. Evidently, Princess Beatrice agrees with this notion, as she rocked some truly eye-catching bedazzled boots at the classic royal Sandringham Church Christmas service back in 2003. The kitten-heeled knee-high black boots were covered in embroidery and gemstones in a flower and sun pattern. She paired the boots with black tights and a long, red coat, perfect for the occasion.
While the boots were undeniably on-trend and a perfect fashion statement even two decades later, they were a bit too off-the-beaten path for some critics and royal lovers. Regardless of whether or not this was a cute footwear fashion statement, some viewed it as too much for a special holiday church service. While a funky accessory like these boots can liven up any outfit, we'll admit — it's much easier to look inappropriate wearing anything when you're standing outside of a church next to Queen Elizabeth II.
