The Damaging Effects Saltwater Can Have On Your Hair

Whether you're enjoying weekends at the beach all summer or are on a winter vacation getaway, there's no denying that splashing around in the ocean is a necessity. The warm months and holidays both don't feel complete without at least a few dips in the salty water but you may notice that your hair doesn't feel its healthiest afterward. We know that being exposed to too much sun can dry out our tresses but the same can be said for saltwater. Certified trichologist Penny James of the Trichology Center exclusively told Glam, "Salt absorbs moisture, and can leave hair feeling dry and brittle. Often making the hair look and feel frizzy, it takes more work to manage."

Those who color their hair need to be extra cautious. "Saltwater can strip away dye for color for those with colored-treated hair. If you have bleached hair, saltwater and sun exposure can cause breakage. The rough texture caused by dryness can contribute to split ends," James warned us. What's more, the brininess of the ocean can irritate the scalp, causing it to itch. However, just because saltwater is damaging to your hair, that doesn't mean you should avoid it completely — just as long as you're not overexposing your strands, they should be just fine.

If your hair is exposed to saltwater for more than a couple of days, take these precautions

Beachgoers who spend a day or two splashing in the sea are in luck, as trichologist Penny James told us that one saltwater session won't cause too much damage to your hair. However, if you're spending over two days frolicking in saltwater, she suggests applying a leave-in conditioner on your hair prior to taking a dip. And, don't forget further sun protection like a hat and hair sunscreen. James also exclusively advised us, "Keep your hair tied back and looking natural."

After you're out of the water, further prevent more damage with a quick spray. "To reduce [the saltwater's] effects, rinse your hair with fresh water after swimming and use a leave-in conditioner before you head out into the ocean or saltwater pool," James recommended. According to our expert, the leave-in conditioner not only protects your hair from saltwater, which causes tangling, but will also give you an easier time safely detangling your strands without any damage. So, ocean lovers need not worry about saltwater wreaking havoc on their hair, just as long as they take the proper precautions.
