What Really Happens To Your Face If You Don't Use SPF Daily?

It's been drilled into our brains that we need to apply sunscreen every day, even when the sun's not out — after all, harmful UV rays can still  damage your skin when clouds are out — but what happens if we don't? Well, we first need to look at what SPF actually does, which is why we spoke to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jenny Liu, FAAD. "Daily SPF use helps protect the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays cause sunburn, while UVA rays penetrate deeper, leading to premature aging and DNA damage," Dr. Liu exclusively told Glam, adding that using sunscreen every day also helps prevent the wrinkles and discoloration that can come with skin aging.

UV rays don't only cause superficial damage, either. "Daily SPF application is the most effective way to protect against various types of skin cancer, including melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma," the dermatologist explained. On that note, Dr. Liu added that sunscreens that contain antioxidants provide a barrier "against free radicals from environmental pollutants," offering a little extra skin protection.

So, it seems that if you don't wear SPF daily, you're putting yourself at risk for a host of issues. And while you may think that skipping a day or two is no big deal, is that really true?

Skipping SPF can cause sun damage to accumulate

If you need a reason to slather on SPF every day, you're in luck, as Dr. Jenny Liu has plenty. The board-certified dermatologist told us that 80% of sun damage comes from being exposed while out and about, not from occasionally lying out in the sun. "Wearing SPF every other day or inconsistently is not effective because UV exposure accumulates over time, even on cloudy days or indoors through windows," she warned us. Over time, she explained, your skin may experience hyperpigmentation, DNA mutations, and accelerated aging.

Those who never wear SPF need to start now, as they're vulnerable to wrinkles, loss of skin elasticity, and dry skin, Dr. Liu added. Even scarier, non-sunscreen users are at a higher risk of developing skin cancer. If you need help finding the best sunscreen for your skin, Dr. Liu told us, "I highly recommend a lightweight, broad-spectrum SPF that suits all skin types, such as EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46. It's formulated with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, which helps reduce redness, calm inflammation, and provide hydration without clogging pores." Moreover, she added, "It's perfect for sensitive or acne-prone skin and provides excellent daily protection against both UVA and UVB rays." Oh, and don't forget to utilize more than just SPF in fending off harmful rays — hats and sunglasses can give you an extra boost of protection.
