Hairstylist Tells Us The Haircuts Everyone Will Be Asking For In Fall 2024

Summertime is almost over, and although not everyone shares a love for fall, colder weather brings a fresh batch of hairstyles and trends to the table that everyone can look forward to in equal measure. Prepare to share pumpkin spice lattes with the girls while showing off your chunky knit sweater and, most importantly, your new 'do. You can expect to see a return of several 2023 favorites among the style line-up, including cropped cuts, face-framing bangs, and butterfly haircuts.

This year, however, there's a clear shift in hair trends that takes into account the diverse range of hair types and textures in a way that major trends failed to do in the past. Those with wavy or curly hair will notice a number of haircuts that are equally flattering for textured strands, along with a variety of lengths and fringe options. Glam spoke exclusively with red carpet hairstylist and makeup artist Luna Viola to hear about the top haircuts for fall 2024, and it looks like there's a little something for everyone.

Exude luxury with an old-money bob

Bob cuts have stolen the show as of late, with variations such as the cowgirl bob, dad bob, and the flippy bob being common requests at the salon. Summer saw its own take on this cropped cut with the blended bob, but now, get ready for the "old-money bob." Yep, the old-money aesthetic is back with a fall upgrade, so fans of classy style can look forward to a continuation of the bob trend as the colder months creep in.

This voluminous haircut is the "most requested style of the year," red carpet hairstylist and makeup artist Luna Viola shares exclusively with Glam. "This bob emphasizes fullness with soft layers and a strong perimeter showing off the hair's natural texture. Very versatile, this style is very youthful and easy [to maintain]." Style your chin-length cut with some volumizing mousse and a dramatic side part to recreate the Old Hollywood glamor look.

The modern pixie cut is perfect for all hair types

A pixie cut is one of the most flattering haircuts for women in their 20s, and it's a match made in heaven for textured hair types. Short pixie and bixie cuts are constantly shifting in and out style, but salons have given the standard pixie a serious revamp in 2024, first with the soft crop and now with the modern pixie cut. "Inspired by the '80s and '90s, this choppy layered style is a modern take on the pixie cut with more movement and texture," Luna Viola reveals exclusively to Glam. "Best suited for wavy and curly hair, the feathered layers and bangs frame the face adding a playful and carefree overall look."

Choppy layers are very much en vogue for fall 2024, and the modern pixie is a cropped cut that delivers on this dynamic hair trend. The wispy bangs and subtle layers breathe life into a static pixie cut, softening the face and creating a light feel that's perfect for pairing with cozy sweaters and scarves.

Butterfly cuts are in for fall

"Sported by many celebrities this year and named the new '90s Rachel style, the butterfly haircut is a mid-length textured cut with layers galore," hairstylist Luna Viola explains exclusively to Glam. The butterfly cut looks especially fabulous on longer hair, as the extra length allows you to better appreciate the cascade of layers and movement. For a butterfly cut, ask for shorter layers on the top to create volume near the roots, which you can blend in with the longer layers on the bottom.

Layers are a key to achieving this textured style, but bangs are the defining feature. "The sultry fringe and cascading bouncy layers are a nod to Brigitte Bardot," Viola explains, referring to Bardot's iconic curtain bangs and dynamic hairstyle. The modern butterfly cut has adopted this '60s-inspired look by adding its own twist on the curtain fringe: butterfly bangs. Complement your butterfly cut with matching bangs for a bouncy cut that frames your face.

You can't go wrong with a midi cut with face-framing pieces

"This mid length cut is still popular this year and will still be an easy style to wear in the fall," stylist Luna Viola exclusively tells Glam. "The collarbone length haircut feels like a fresh start without taking off too much length." For this reason, the mid-length or "midi" cut is one of the most versatile haircuts, which is why it never truly goes out of style. There are always ways to mix it up and make this cut your own by adding layers, adjusting the length of your bangs, and dyeing your hair.

"The midi cut works best with some soft waves and longer face-framing pieces for a touch of movement," Viola adds. The face-framing pieces help give your hair some volume, but you can also go for a skinny lob if the thought of styling bangs everyday gives you a headache. If you can master the retro '70s blowout or a modern bouncy blowout, then the midi cut makes the perfect low-maintenance cut.

Embrace your natural waves and curls with curly haircuts

Accepting your natural hair type and learning to love your waves, curls, or coils is one of the leading hair trends in 2024. Styling your locks according to your natural hair type brings you one step closer to establishing your own unique look and building the confidence to sport your natural hair. Asking your stylist for a curly cut is the best way to do just that. "From the curly shag 'do to mermaid waves, this fall it's all about movement embracing the natural texture of the hair," Luna Viola shares with us exclusively.

When it comes to curly cuts, finding the right style depends on your curl pattern and haircut preference. The butterfly shag cut is a popular option for curly hair, as it creates tons of volume with layers and feathered ends. "The shag cut is modern, versatile to all hair types and gives it that cool lived-in look," Viola explains. "The defined feature is heavy bangs and square or razor cut layers that give this look its edge."
