How Brittany Mahomes' Style Changed After Meeting Taylor Swift

Let's face it: Everybody needs a bestie in their life, and in this respect, celebrities and A-listers aren't much different from the rest of us. They, too, need a friend they can lean on, have fun with and, why not, share some style tips. So, it comes as no surprise that Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, would develop such a close-knit friendship with Taylor Swift, who's currently dating the QB's friend and teammate, Travis Kelce.

After accepting Kelce's invitation to watch a game in September 2023, the rest is pretty much history. And while the power couple's romance has taken much of the spotlight, so has the pop singer's developing friendship with Brittany Mahomes. What's more, Mahomes' style seems to have changed quite a bit since the dawn of her friendship with the international icon.

Mahomes and Swift have been spotted together at the field cheering on their beaus and simply out and about enjoying each other's company — and their sartorial choices have become increasingly similar. To determine just how much our besties influence our style — and if this is the case between these two blond A-listers — we spoke exclusively with Dr. Patrick Wanis, a behavior and relationship expert and the author of "Get Over Your Ex Now." "The first point to make here is that friends constantly influence each other," he told us. "We are influenced by everything to which we are exposed, and the more time we spend together, the greater the influence will be."

Brittany Mahomes borrows a look from her friend's magazine cover

"Friends can often start to copy each other's style depending on how they perceive each other. For example, a friend may copy the other person because they want to fit in, to belong, to be included, liked, and approved," Dr. Patrick Wanis exclusively told us. "Alternatively, a friend might start to copy the other person's style because they look up to them, admire them, and desire something the other person has externally, such as extraordinary popularity, and internally, such as confidence and charisma." There's no doubt that both women are charismatic, talented, and forces of nature in their own right. But there's equally no doubt that Mahomes and Swift are influencing each other's style, especially since they currently share a stylist, Venetia Kidd. While Kidd has been working with the pop singer since 2018, she recently took over styling Mahomes' for her public appearances during the model's Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue press tour.

With the guidance of Kidd, Mahomes was definitely channeling her inner Swiftie as she celebrated her friend's bachelorette party in Mexico. During that February weekend, the model posted a picture on her Instagram stories sporting a mini version of the exact same dress that Swift wore on her TIME Magazine cover. And since the pop singer started up her friendship with Mahomes (and, of course, her relationship with Travis Kelce), Swift has given us some of her sexiest outfits yet — further justifying what Dr. Wanis says: Friends are sure to influence one another's style.

Brittany Mahomes and Taylor Swift match their outfits as BFFs should

We commend Brittany Mahomes for how she made Taylor Swift feel instantly at ease as the newest member of the "footballers' wives and girlfriends" gang. "Taylor and Brittany have grown even closer over the past several months," one source told Us Weekly. "They have a really genuine friendship and love hanging out at the games together and cheering on their men." And one way to deepen their friendship is by adopting each other's style. Enter their head-turning matching clothing choices.

"There are also impressionable moments in a friendship or relationship when one is more open to being influenced while trying to understand their role in the context of the relationship or if the relationship is evolving or changing because of external circumstances — life transitions or other defining moments," Dr. Patrick Wanis exclusively told us. "Thus, at these crossroads, they may copy or adopt each other's styles to further bond or deepen the connection between them."

Take for example the matching sets sported by Mahomes and Swift while they cheered on their beaus. The two friends were spotted wearing the same red jacket, white hats (a beanie for Swift and a fluffy bucket hat for Mahomes), and slim-fitting black pants. But the power duo didn't stop there when it came to sharing the same sartorial choices. They've also coordinated their outfits when enjoying a night out. For instance, in January, they were spotted visiting the Spago restaurant in Beverly Hills, wearing similar black miniskirts and knee-high boots.

Brittany Mahomes takes a cue from her bestie and channels athleisure in her ensembles

Brittany Mahomes has always been dressed to a T when watching her hubby play. Wearing high-heeled knee-high boots, even when she was pregnant, the A-lister gave us some of her most stunning pregnancy-style moments while on the field.

However, since she and Taylor Swift began their friendship, we've witnessed Mahomes sport a more laid-back look on certain occasions. Channeling more of an athleisure vibe in her ensembles, the Kansas City Current's founder and co-owner went for a casual baseball cap to match her famous friend during one of the games.

As Dr. Patrick Wanis exclusively told us, "In the early stages of a friendship, two people may start to adopt or imitate each other's behaviors, attitudes, or even clothing styles to create common ground, build rapport, and be accepted. This is seen as a means to compliment and win over the other person." Through their significant others, the two women already share a lot in common, so it's not too surprising that Mahomes was quick to incorporate a more athletic aesthetic (like Swift) during her husband's football games.

Brittany Mahomes embraces her friend's love for metallic and shiny vibes

Although Brittany Mahomes is usually spot on with her sartorial choices, she's not immune to making some mistakes every now and then. Thankfully, her most outdated outfits are quickly overlooked given her stylish and vogue attires, especially when she looks to Swift for inspo. Celebrating New Year's Eve with boyfriend Travis Kelce, the iconic singer was spotted wearing a sparkling silver sequin minidress — and just a couple of months later, Mahomes posted an Instagram photo wearing an equally dashing (and sparkling) maxi dress.

"Women ... influence each other's style more readily," Dr. Patrick Wanis exclusively told us. "Women are often open to change because, from the time they are born, they experience many biological changes ... making them more adaptable to change." While both women donned sparkly ensembles, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model opted for a deep red slim-fitting dress, complete with shiny tinsel from top to bottom. And while Mahomes and Swift each styled their hair in soft mermaid waves, they did sport the look a bit differently: Swift chose a side-swept fringe, while Mahomes wore a more classic middle part that perfectly complemented her facial features.

Brittany Mahomes stays true to her individual style no matter what

"In a society that promotes collectivism and community, it's easy to be influenced by others and adopt the group's way of dressing, thinking, and acting. In Western culture, which tends to treasure and prize individuality, this can be problematic," Dr. Patrick Wanis exclusively told us. "When friends start to copy each other's style, they may begin to lose their own individual identities and perhaps even form a collective identity."

Despite their matching outfits, we don't think we need to worry about Brittany Mahomes losing her individuality and unique fashion sense. In a January outing at Nobu in New York, the two BFFs deviated from their customary coordinating outfits and matching hairdos as each channeled her own dernier cri attire. Swift went for a black A-line minidress with puffy sleeves, while Mahomes wore a tweed miniskirt with a matching cropped tailored jacket.

As Dr. Wanis told us, "You cannot lose your own identity if you are clear about who you are and what is truly important to you. If you have a clear sense of your identity, you can still embrace other elements without losing yourself." The fact that the two iconic women don't allow their friendship to cloud their individuality is a telltale sign that their friendship is healthy and built to last.
