Why You'll Want To Try Chic Silver Highlights If You Have Brunette Hair

Usually, we dye our hair to get rid of grey strands. But these days, many are intentionally adding the metallic silver shade as highlights. Jennifer Korab, celebrity hairstylist and owner of Renaissance Salon, exclusively told Glam that "the trend of brunette hair adding gray and silver highlights can be attributed to several factors. For one, it has become fashionable and is seen as a chic and sophisticated look." Another reason to rock gray? "The contrast between dark brunette hair and silver highlights can create a striking and modern appearance," Korab shared with us.

With many celebs proudly showing off their gray hair, like Sarah Jessica Parker and Hilarie Burton Morgan, folks aren't covering theirs up as much either. "By adding extra gray or silver highlights, people can blend their natural grays in a stylish way, celebrating the aging process rather than hiding it," Korab stated. While silver highlights look great on any hair color, they're particularly complimentary on those with dark hair. Still, according to the hair expert, there are ways to incorporate them into lighter strands as well.

Silver highlights work differently on brunette and blonde hair

Gray highlights can be added to pretty much any hair shade, but they'll have a different effect depending on the base color, hairstylist Jennifer Korab exclusively told Glam. One of the benefits of adding gray highlights to brunette hair is that they blend in well, so dark-haired gals don't need as many touch-ups, the hair expert explained. "Gray and silver highlights can be versatile and less maintenance compared to other high-contrast colors," she added.

However, just because you have blonde locks, it doesn't mean you can't hop on the silver highlights trend. "On blonde hair, they can add dimension and a cool, edgy tone to blonde hair. They can also help to neutralize any warm or brassy undertones in blonde hair, creating a more ashy or platinum effect," Korab explained to us. Just keep in mind that while silver highlights are fairly low-maintenance, they still require upkeep, and you'll definitely want to grab some products to help you keep yours looking fresh.

How to care for silver highlights

Like with any color-treated hair, silver highlights need regular visits to the salon. Our hair expert Jennifer Korab stated, "Maintaining gray and silver highlights requires more specific care to keep the color vibrant and prevent it from becoming dull or brassy. To keep your highlights looking their best, I recommend having your highlights touched up every 10-12 weeks and adding a gloss appointment in between." A hair gloss treatment can revive the silver color without altering the shade and give life to dull-looking strands.

Korab also advised using sulfate-free shampoos to keep the color from fading and incorporating a purple-colored shampoo for gray hair. Be sure not to wash your hair too often — the salon owner suggests using dry shampoo in between washes to maintain a fresh color. To use dry shampoo the right way, make sure you're not spraying too close and aim for about six to 10 inches from your head. Wait 30 seconds and then brush off any residue with your hands or hairbrush. Your silver highlights will gleam just as they did the moment you first stepped out of the salon with your new 'do.
