Wardrobe Color Trends We'll See Everywhere In Fall 2024
The 2024 fashion scene has so far been full of surprises. The Y2K aesthetic made a miraculous comeback at the start of the year, while transparent skirts became the hottest ticket through spring and summer. But despite the unexpected twists and turns, the year's color crazes have made perfect sense. Summer's hottest color trends have gravitated toward light and airy tones that match perfectly with the warm weather, and as we look toward fall, hues are becoming bolder and deeper to align with the rich autumn ambiance.
"Coming off of hot colors for summer, the colors you will be seeing this fall are going to resemble the precious stones that you have always loved," explains renowned Hollywood fashion stylist and media contributor Joseph Katz. To get the low-down on what shades we can expect for the spooky season, Glam spoke exclusively with the fashion guru, whose YouTube channel The Katz Walk offers exclusive fashion insights, celebrity interviews, and style tips. "Some of the top colors are a beautiful amethyst purple, emerald green, amber yellow, intense red, [and] royal blue," Katz reveals.
Amethyst purple will be everywhere this fall
While summer favored breezy lavenders and lilacs, fall 2024 is moving toward a deeper shade of purple. Amethyst might be described as a true purple — not quite as dark as a violet, or as warm and reddish as the berry tones. It's more inky and bluish, while still being bright enough to easily be the statement-maker of your outfit. And it's this vibrancy that has perhaps led to the popularity of amethyst as the cooler weather rolls around. "These colors are trending because we are seeing a shift from summer which [saw a] huge influx in very vibrant colors," Joseph Katz tells Glam exclusively.
This kind of purple is inherently fun, so it suits casual looks and daywear perfectly. But that doesn't mean you can't get away with wearing it in the evening; an amethyst satin dress or even a tailored pantsuit is guaranteed to stand out in the crowd in the best way possible.
Keep it sophisticated with emerald green
No matter which season we enter, green seems to be a staple. From the bright Bottega green that has dominated everything since 2021, to the slime-like brat green that took over this summer, this earthy hue is here to stay. For fall 2024, it's getting a deep, dark makeover and transforming into emerald. Naturally, this rich green looks impeccable on luminous fabrics like silk, since it gives off the impression of a true precious stone, but you could also tone it down with a flatter emerald power suit.
Joseph Katz reveals exclusively to Glam that these precious-stone shades "are perfect for sophisticated looks," and emerald green, in particular, lends itself to boss-babe business dressing. It's got more character than neutral shades like black and brown, but it's deep enough that it complements your overall look rather than stealing the show, like a brighter color might. Emerald green is also a match made in heaven for cream accessories, since the light shade provides the perfect contrast.
Amber yellow is a fall staple
Pale butter yellow was one of this spring's standout colors, and like everything else, it's getting darker as fall emerges. Along with mustard, amber yellow has traditionally been a cooler-weather go-to, and is predicted to feature heavily in the autumn trends this year. Generally speaking, yellow is a bright shade that can be emotionally exhausting for some, so it might not be the first color you reach for in any season. But the gold-like amber is easier on the eyes thanks to its depth, offering more of an earthy and natural feel that makes it easier to blend in to the rest of your wardrobe seamlessly.
And if you're really averse to wearing yellow (no judgment here!), you can still incorporate this trending color into your wardrobe in smaller ways. Speaking exclusively to Glam, Joseph Katz confirms that these popular colors will also be taking over "footwear and accessories," so you can still get in on the action with an amber shoulder bag or even amber sneakers.
Turn heads with intense red this fall
By nature, red is a bold and statement-making shade, and that's especially true for the ruby-like intense red that is set to trend come fall, per our exclusive conversation with Joseph Katz. The first hint of this color craze reared its head at Australian Fashion Week back in May, where guests let the eye-catching tone complement their quieter outfits. Rather than going for more overbearing looks in monochromatic intense red, they kept their ensembles neutral and weaved in small glimpses of bright red through accessories or smaller garments. It now seems to have bloomed into a global phenomenon, with Balmain, Carolina Herrera, Jason Wu, and Versace all joining the ranks to send this shade down their ready-to-wear fall runways.
Wearing head-to-toe red is one surefire way to steal the attention in any room, and it can even help to increase your confidence if you aren't feeling it already. But little hints of red offer a subtle alternative for those who prefer a minimalist, less conspicuous vibe
Royal blue has been trending all year and will remain a star in fall
Sky blue was huge in spring 2024, but the second half of the year will firmly be about a more elegant tone. Though royal blue is slightly lighter than sapphire, Joseph Katz tells us exclusively that this shade completes the trending colors inspired by precious stones. It's all in the name with royal blue — this color gives off an air of sophistication and class, which makes it ideal for evening wear and special events. While we're looking forward to a fall tinged with this regal shade, it's actually been making waves all year. It featured in spring/summer collections from the likes of Giorgio Armani and Burberry, and it's showing no signs of slowing down.
A royal blue maxi or midi dress will give you the ultimate high-fashion moment, but you can also wear this shade in a more casual way by rocking royal-blue sweaters and cardigans as the weather cools down. It's also a safe yet dynamic hue for coats, skirts, and accessories.
