5 Celebrities Who Re-Wore Outfits On Multiple Red Carpets
In the world of A-listers, the pressure to look fabulous (even when they are just out and about) is immense. With all those paparazzi lurking, and their photos constantly popping up on our social media feeds, we can only imagine how important it is for them to be constantly dressed to the T. Understandably, the pressure to wow fans becomes exponentially bigger when they are attending star-studded occasions — where cameras flash nonstop and critics are relentless in their judgments.
As such, we are used to seeing celebrities putting their best foot forward (pun intended) when walking the red carpet. We eagerly anticipate the best and worst-dressed celebs at the Oscars and devour their appearances, hoping to be inspired — or shocked. But what is truly refreshing, is seeing stars re-wear outfits at multiple red carpet events. In an era where stars compete to land a spot on the coveted best-dressed list, it is commendable when they recycle older garments and give them a fresh look.
From the Duchess of Cambridge to Tiffany Haddish and Kiera Knightley, we applaud the celebrities who upcycle their clothes and give them a new life, either by pairing them with new sets of accessories or by introducing slight alterations to the outfits. While several A-listers have successfully — and unabashedly — dared to re-wear the same clothing, this is a list of our favorite déjà vu appearances.
Gwyneth Paltrow's iconic red velvet Gucci suit resurfaces 25 years later
During the 1996 MTV Music Video Awards, Gwyneth Paltrow appeared in a ruby-red velvet suit. The co-ord — designed by Tom Ford for the Gucci fall/winter 1996 collection — dazzled the attendees and wowed the A-lister's fans. Paired with a tailored light-colored periwinkle shirt (which is, by the way, the trendiest color to base your 2024 summer outfits around), the ensemble made history.
As one of Paltrow's most iconic ensembles, we couldn't help but feel a little bit excited when the actor decided to replicate the look during the Gucci Love Parade in 2021 — an extravagant event on Hollywood Boulevard. Paying homage to the stardom of Ford as a Gucci designer, the star of the Marvel series repeated the 1996 look to the last detail. She paired the iconic suit with the same colored Oxford shirt and the same red heels. Paltrow even replicated the hairdo from her 1996 appearance, opting for a similar chic low-chignon.
Rita Moreno is undeniably the queen of encores
Rita Moreno made history in 1962 during the 34th Oscars Ceremony Awards, as the first Latina to win the trophy. At the time, she also made history with probably the shortest acceptance speech. When she stepped on the stage to pick up the golden statuette, the "Anita from West Side Story" simply said, "I can't believe it! Good Lord. I leave you with that!"
Well, what we can't believe is that Moreno rocked the exact same dress 56 years later in 2018 for the 90th Oscars ceremony. And rocked she did! "It's been hanging in my closet!" the actor told Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet (via Harper's Bazaar).
The queen of encores made some alterations to the top of the gown. Instead of the high boat neckline, the revamped dress sported a strapless, slightly heart-shaped neckline. Moreno completed the throwback look with the exact same satin black opera gloves! She switched up the hairdo a bit this time around and added a black headband more reminiscent of her dark locks of yesteryear.
Keira Knightley didn't retire her gorgeous little white tulle dress
More of a nostalgic prom dress than a regal gown, Keira Knightley's wedding dress made an impression with its simplistic, girly elegance. The famous actor chose to complement the short tulle dress's romantic aura with a flower wreath — which adorned her shoulder-length hair — and a cute cropped jacket on top.
Knightley loved the dress so much that she did not retire it after her 2013 wedding. On the contrary, the intimate ceremony at the town Hall in Mazan, in Provence, France — where she tied the knot with James Righton — was not the last time she wore it. To be fair, it was not even the first time she had worn the beautiful Rodarte dress.
The "Star Wars" actor actually first wore the dress in 2008 during a BAFTA party in London. She then rewore it in 2013 for her hush-hush wedding and then again that year at the SeriousFun London Gala. This time, she added a long-sleeved chiffon bodice on top of the strapless neckline, adorned with sparkling beads at the cuffs and neckline. Given that A-listers typically spare no costs for their wedding-day frocks, we have to bow to Knightley recycling — and upcycling — garment options for her special day (and onwards!).
Cate Blanchett's re-use of this garment shows us that she is a fashion icon
Cate Blanchett is renowned for re-wearing garments on several red carpet events. And even though we may gasp at this revelation, the "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" actor does not think too much of it. She told Business of Fashion in 2023, "It should be completely unremarkable, the idea of re-wearing [clothes], because we do it in our daily lives. We do it out of habit, we do it out of choice, we do it out of necessity. It's an expression of who you are and how you look at the world." She also added, "I've always re-worn and recycled and all of those things. There's nothing remarkable about that. There are millions of people doing that."
Yes, Cate, we are right there with you on re-wearing outfits! Especially when it's done as expertly as she has on multiple occasions. Take, for example, her sustainable attire during the 2023 Oscars. She wore a maxi navy skirt with a train, Guiseppe Zanotti shoes, and a sustainable draped blue top from past Louis Vuitton collections. She completed the look with gorgeous dangling diamond earrings. Not afraid of being an outfit repeater, Blanchett re-wore the stunning top at the Louis Vuitton Women's Fall-Winter 2024 show. This time, she paired it with a pair of sleek black pants and black stilettos.
Jane Fonda reigns supreme for re-wearing the same blazer in the same year
Jane Fonda made headlines when she won her first Oscar for her role as Bree Daniels in "Klute." However, she made history when both she and her legendary father, Henry Fonda, became the first father-daughter duo nominated for an Academy Award in 1981. The Fondas were both nominated for their roles in the movie "On Golden Pond", in which they played a father-daughter pair.
We can't help but marvel at Jane's accomplishments. Though acting skills catapulted her into stardom, her classy style made her an exemplar in the fashion world. The recipient of two Academy, two BAFTAs, and seven Golden Globe Awards continues to woo fans with her style choices even in her 80s. Fonda not only bends the rules of fashion but re-writes them when it comes to recycling her garments. While we admire A-listers who re-wear outfits, say, several years down the line, the "Grace and Frankie" star risked eliciting eye-rolls by "daring" to appear in the same velour jacket only months apart — gasp!
Jane sported the black tailored jacket (complete with rhinestones in the shape of fireworks) on two different occasions. The first was during Saint Laurent's fall 2016 menswear collection fashion show. The second was during a formal event at the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability (with her gorgeous recycling option, she certainly dressed for the part). We love her courageous style, and we applaud her sustainability efforts. To be honest, this is a jacket we, too, would love to wear again and again.
