Worst-Dressed Celebs Of The Week: Rachel Zoe's Fundraiser Fail, Tanner Adell's Mesh Mix-Up, & More
Another week of film premieres, star-studded fundraisers, street-level celeb-spotting, and red-carpet events has passed. Thankfully for us, that means a week's worth of new celebrity fashions, running the gamut from Zendaya's continuously stunning tenniscore 'fits for the "Challengers" press tour and Katie Holmes' flawless denim-on-denim style to some odder, less inspiring takes. For instance, the 2024 CMT Music Awards — always an over-the-top spectacle worth ogling — brought out larger-than-life Western fashions ranging from chic to costumey and outright strange.
While enthusiastic clothes horses can take a cue or two from the best looks of the week, it's equally if not more important to note what not to do. The less successful ensembles of the past week include some surprising missteps, even from certified fashionistas like Rachel Zoe. Looking back at these off-base choices, we're reminded that a thoughtfully styled fit, proportion, and theme can win or lose the day when dressing for any event.
Tanner Adell
"Buckle Bunny" singer Tanner Adell is stunning, and we've seen some smoking-hot country styles from her in the past. But at the 2024 CMT Music Awards on April 7, Adell took things in an unexpected and confusing direction. Mesh fabrics are hot right now — and this dress could have worked — but why choose such a pronounced high-low hem when the fabric is already see-through? There's more leg than dress in this look, rendering the sheer effect pointless. A full-length hem would have been a chicer choice. Ultimately, she wasn't one of the worst-dressed stars at the CMT Awards due to the event having many unfortunate looks, but we couldn't avoid mentioning her here.
Leah Turner
Well-fitted silhouettes could mitigate many fashion flops. Unfortunately for "T-Shirt" singer Leah Turner, her denim frock at the 2024 CMT Music Awards didn't have that going for it. While her outfit was definitely on-theme and appropriate for the country scene, the stiff denim tube dress did little to complement Turner, especially with the baffling addition of sideways ruffles and a massive, asymmetrically placed denim rosette. While probably meant to be playful, these bizarre details left the dress too gaudy for us.
Rachel Zoe
Rachel Zoe is a bona fide fashion maven, but there's no way we could let this look pass without comment. Attending a benefit for the Women's Cancer Research Fund titled An Unforgettable Evening on April 10, Zoe donned a vibrant pink gown with one of the most inexplicable waistlines we've ever seen. Caught somewhere between a peplum and a water floatie, this bizarre silhouette attempted to push fashion boundaries, but it seems the boundaries pushed back. The structured waist distracts rather than complements, undermining the gown's nice draping and event-appropriate hue.
Stephanie Quayle
"Selfish" singer Stephanie Quayle has persevered through intense personal tragedy, as detailed in her upcoming book, "Why Do We Stay?: How My Toxic Relationship Can Help You Find Freedom." It's a story worth telling, but we're not sure that donning the book cover as a dress was the right move for the CMT Music Awards. Self-promotion is a tough line to walk. At another event — like a TED Talk or fundraiser — this dress could have been a powerful statement, but it felt jarring at a boisterous awards show and likely got lost in the night's cacophony.
Angie K
"Real Talk" singer Angie K also presented a head-scratching outfit at the CMT Music Awards. From its very foundations, this ensemble struggled — the shiny, café-au-lait-colored fabric of the matching cargo pants and tube top amplified every wrinkle and seam, pulling attention to all the wrong places. This wasn't helped by the seemingly random accessorizing. Angie K's black boots and silver body-chain collar had nothing to do with the rest of her aesthetic or color scheme, creating a disjointed finish to the overall look.
Grace Carter
This might be a controversial pick, but Grace Carter's dress at the "Challengers" United Kingdom premiere on April 10 caught our eyes for all the wrong reasons. The "Silence" singer looked naturally beautiful — and the dress gave a nod to classic tenniscore looks — but it felt too casual compared to all the other styles on the red carpet that night. The vintage color scheme seemed dull for an evening look, too. We can't help but think this outfit should have made its debut at a daytime event — perhaps at an actual tennis match.
