Can Hailey Bieber's Unique Eye Cream Placement Treat Signs Of Aging All Over?
Like it or not, Hailey Bieber is the it-girl of our generation — and she doesn't take the title lightly. In fact, with the way new trends keep popping up with her name written all over them, it seems like she works overtime to bring us all the good tips, tricks, and trends on every facet of life. From glazed donut nails to the blunt rom-com bob, the model and businesswoman has popularized plenty of beauty and fashion trends, and now she's caught our attention by placing eye cream not just beneath and on the sides of her eyes, but on the lids, too. As Bieber explains it in a 2021 YouTube video, "I put eye cream on my lids too, because those get saggy as you age."
While we often neglect the upper eyelid when applying our eye creams — after all, most wrinkles appear beneath and beside the eyes — perhaps we should consider the potential anti-aging benefits of doing it the Hailey Bieber way. Eye cream is a controversial, endlessly discussed topic, and some experts believe it should firmly stay in the conventional areas only, to defend against eye irritation. At the same time, other dermatologists do indeed vouch for applying it on your eyelids, too. The majority vote seems to be in favor of Bieber's method, so don't be afraid to give this a try — just be sure to listen to your skin and stop if you do experience signs of irritation.
Hailey Bieber's eye cream technique
Although we're used to applying our eye cream solely onto the skin underneath our eyes, where the thin skin is most prone to crow's feet and other signs of aging, Hailey Bieber's approach to eye cream application makes a lot of sense, if you think about it. If you're used to moisturizing every inch of your skin, why not the eyelids? They deserve just as much love and care as the rest of your face and body.
As seen on Bieber's YouTube channel, she goes in with eye cream as a second-to-last step in her eight-step nighttime skincare routine. "I'm usually really, really diligent about eye cream because the eyes are a really, really sensitive area and I'm trying to prevent getting crow's feet," she says to her audience. The twist is simply applying eye cream up to the eyelid and the under-eyes, which makes all the difference.
Plus, if you want to imitate Bieber's delicate finger-tapping motions while applying your eye cream, it can only enhance your anti-aging results. In fact, patting in your eye cream with your ring finger (your weakest digit) will always be the gentlest approach for the eye area. "Dab the product along the orbital bone, starting from the inner corner of the eye to the outside corner," dermatologist Jaimie DeRosa, M.D., tells Byrdie's readers. And yes, DeRosa confirms the efficacy of Bieber's trick: "You will want to do this for both the upper and lower eyelids."
What do dermatologists think?
Some experts, like Dr. Jaimie DeRosa, are all for eye cream on the lids. "I believe in putting your eye cream all around your eye, including the eyelid," dermatologist Dendy Engelman, M.D., seconds, speaking to Well + Good, and board-certified Dr. Andrea Suarez can also be seen applying product to her lids in her 2022 Ceravé Skin Renewing Eye Cream review, which was posted to YouTube. However, it's important to note that some experts don't support this strategy.
According to dermatologist Stacy Chimento, M.D., eye cream should never be applied too close to the eyes due to the risk of irritation. "As your body temperature rises, the product can travel on its own," Dr. Chimento tells Real Simple. "There is no need to place it too close to the eye and risk irritation."
There's conflicting advice out there, which means you'll need to decide at your own discretion, with the help of a dermatologist you know and trust. What is certain is that everyone's skin is different. If you find that something works well for you, listen to your skin first and foremost. If your eyelids, like Bieber's, need the moisture and don't seem to get irritated, feel free to try out her method. Just be sure that you're using the correct product. "Eye creams are formulated specifically for the thinner, more delicate skin around our eyes," Chimento tells Real Simple. Whether you apply it to your lids or not, regular moisturizers won't cut it.
