Texas Hair Is The Biggest 2024 Trend In More Ways Than One
Sleek, pin-straight hair is being swapped for the big, bouncy Texas hair of the '70s and '80s in 2024. We saw Miley Cyrus rock Barbarella-inspired hair at the 66th annual Grammys in early February. There, she evoked an almost Farrah Fawcett-like look with the sides of her hair blown outward into wings. "I've been working with Miley for a long time and tonight we wanted to create different than last year, with a style that felt like it had a '70s, Barbarella feel while still having a modern, punk edge," her hairstylist, Bob Recine, told People of the showstopping look.
Then, Beyoncé showed up to the 2024 Super Bowl sporting voluminous waves, which her stylist Neal Farinah dubbed "Super Bowl Texan hair" in an Instagram post on the day of the Big Game. If Queen Bey says big hair is in, then we're all for it. However, not all of us are lucky enough to have a celebrity stylist on hand, and to get a sky-high 'do, you're going to need quite a few products and tools.
Quick tips for achieving Texas-sized hair
For huge hair, spritz some heat protectant spray on completely dry hair and use a 1-¼ inch barrel curling iron to make large curls around your head. Work in sections by clamping up the top half of your hair and making your way around the bottom. Once you're done, curl the rest of your hair, maneuvering the iron as close to your crown as you can so that you create a lot of volume up top. Finish with a blast of hairspray that doesn't have too much hold — you want your curls to have movement and bounce.
Foam rollers are a great heat-free option to get Texas hair
If you want that big '80s 'do, you can get totally authentic and use the foam rollers that were popular in the era. Find ones in a large size, and wrap your damp hair around each one until your whole head is done. If you don't want to use heat on your strands, you can always wrap your head in a scarf and sleep with the rollers on. You'll wake up to beautiful Texas hair with minimal effort.
Cute bangs add a sweet touch to Texas hair
Balance out huge, curly hair with some wispy bangs to frame your forehead. You can create some volume to your fringe by curling it inward with a round brush and a blast of warm air from your blow dryer. You'll need your bangs to be slightly long so that the ends hit right below your eyebrows. Anything above that will throw off the Texas hairstyle.
Give your Texas hair a big '80s flip
In Texas, the higher the hair, the better. However, you don't have to live in the Lone Star State to recreate the look. During the '80s, folks from all over the United States had bangs that were teased super high. "Eighties blowouts are all about lifting the roots," hairstylist Devin Toth told Allure, adding "Use lots of volumizing products and lift the roots with a metal round brush." Finally, reach for the Aqua Net to keep that height in place.
Texas hair doesn't always have to be high
If you're not a fan of the bouffant look or want to counteract an oblong face shape, you can leave the top of your hair on the flatter side. Instead, create volume on the sides and bottom of your hair by using a round brush for your at-home blowout. Be sure to spritz with volumizing spray for extra help in keeping the curls big.
