The Worst-Dressed Celebs At The 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards

Monday, January 15, 2024, marked a historical occasion for television and awards show fans alike: The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California. Television buffs may also notice that the January air date, the result of the actors' strike, is something of a return to the show's roots: Though the glitzy event typically airs in September, the first three Emmys ceremonies were also held in January.

This year's event brings together some of the finest stars in modern-day television, from Ali Wong of Netflix's "Beef" (up for 13 Emmys) to Ayo Edebiri, nominated for her supporting role in the fan-favorite Hulu series "The Bear."

Naturally, at an event as star-studded as the Emmys, television nominations aren't the only thing to watch for — in fact, it's no secret that many tune in just to view the evening's fashions. While Edebiri dazzled viewers in a luxe Louis Vuitton dress made of fitted black leather, the same couldn't be said for several other celebrity guests in attendance. Wong, for example, arrived in a gown that could only be described as an epic battle between sequins and florals — not exactly our idea of primetime elegance. Yearning to learn more about the worst-dressed celebs at the 75th Emmy Awards? Let's dig into the outfits that earned some attendees' spots on our worst-dressed list.

Aubrey Plaza

It's hard not to love Aubrey Plaza, the quick-witted actor who's stolen our hearts in everything from "Parks and Recreation" to "The White Lotus," which was nominated for several awards this year. While her ivory-colored dress could very well be a nod to the latter's title, it didn't sit right with us. The squarish structured top stuck out like a sore thumb, provoking visions of blank printer paper pages rather than Old Hollywood glamour.

Ali Wong

Another celeb who didn't quite dress to impress was Ali Wong. Wong is one of our favorite TV stars between her work on "Big Mouth" and "Beef," but we can't hide how we feel about her odd outfit choice at the 75th Emmys. We actually loved the ditsy floral print of her blue maxi-length skirt, but the silver sequined top, which seemed more Ice Capades than Emmys, completely spoiled the look for us.

Jazz Charton (with Kieran Culkin)

What would one of our worst-dressed lists be without a celebrity (or two) playing it safe? As it turns out, tonight's offending look in this category is a double feature: Jazz Charton and partner Kieran Culkin served up a whole 'lotta nothing with their matchy-matchy onyx attire. There's nothing inherently wrong with wearing head-to-toe basic black, but we have to sprinkle a bit of shade on this sensibly dressed duo for choosing the easy way out on an occasion as momentous as the 75th Emmys.

Marin Hinkle

Black isn't the only color that can be used to err on the side of caution when dressing for an awards show — just take a look at Marin Hinkle for proof. While her silvery 1940s-inspired gown was undoubtedly gorgeous on her, we wished she'd have added a little more personality to the final fit. Still, steely metallics are poised to be one of 2024's top color trends, so we've got to hand it to Hinkle for riding this fashion wave early, even if this particular garment was underwhelming.

Alex Borstein

We never knew Alex Borstein was such a passionate fan of the 2001 "Lady Marmalade" music video — that is, until we saw her red-hot attire at the 75th Emmy Awards. Stars — they're just like us! There's little doubt in our mind that the "Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" star was inspired by "Moulin Rouge" when she chose this over-the-top outfit for the show. In some ways, we approve of this smoldering crimson and black fit wholeheartedly due to its inspo, but its unusual, busy details ultimately — and quickly — landed Borstein on our worst-dressed list.

Selena Gomez

Normally, we adore Selena Gomez's sense of style, so we were sorry to see the star land on our worst-dressed list. Sadly, we weren't left with much choice after catching a glimpse of the multitalented mogul's gown at tonight's ceremony. The flashy illusion design failed to make a positive impression on us, and we weren't too fond of her choice to rock a dress-matching burgundy lip, either. Ultimately, the silhouette just fell flat.

Riley Keough

On paper, Riley Keough's dress should work: It has sparkles, silvery accents, a fitted waist, and a sultry, deep neckline. Unfortunately, it didn't translate quite as well on the "Daisy Jones & the Six" star. Wearing her raven hair in a slicked-back pompadour style, the actor's overall look felt more like a hastily thrown-together Halloween costume than Emmys-worthy attire. Moreover, it nearly veered into basic black dress territory, which is never good if you're a celeb looking to swerve worst-dressed lists.

Kirsten Dunst

Kirsten Dunst has served us some of the best red-carpet 'fits of all time, from her sharp Salvatore Ferragamo skirt set at the 2021 Cannes Festival to her flouncy, blush Rodarte gown at the 2020 Golden Globes. Regrettably, that magical fashion sense was nowhere to be found in Dunst's outfit at tonight's Emmys. The actor's wine-colored gown fell flat on the legendary blond beauty, giving us flashbacks to frumpy bridesmaid dresses we'd rather forget.

Jessica Chastain

We'll be the first to admit that we love Jessica Chastain's bold use of chartreuse at tonight's Emmys; after all, acid green is one of our favorites on the color wheel. However, something about the "Tammy and George" lead's custom Gucci gown didn't do it for us. Despite sweet finishes like its fun, feathery fringe, the design's neon hue and awkward tailoring weren't the most complementary choices for Chastain.

Natasha Lyonne

There are plenty of things we love about Natasha Lyonne's ensemble at the 75th Emmys, from her awesome copper-colored hair to her perfectly applied makeup. That being said, we had a few qualms with the "Poker Face" stunner's style at tonight's event. We're not sure if it was its slightly too-long length or the strange, silver-threaded embellishments along her bust, but we weren't totally taken with Lyonne's droopy dress design.
