Winged Eyeliner Is Getting A Supersized Makeover - Try The Trend
As 2023 draws to a close, many of us are gearing up to party and celebrate the festive season. For the makeup lovers among us, this means being prepared with fun and unique makeup looks to complement our outfits. We looked to recent fashion runways for some makeup inspiration to up our beauty game, and one thing that stood out above all else were the numerous graphic winged eyeliner looks.
Those of you who are makeup newbies may want to stick to a basic, foolproof winged eyeliner look. Others may already know how to do winged eyeliner like a makeup pro. What really struck us about winged eyeliner in 2023 is how it's getting a supersized makeover by the makeup artists creating looks on models. Whether it was makeup artist Daniel Sallstrom using the brightly colored MAC Acrylic Paints to draw "very straight" lines in lieu of wings, or heavy, smudged out liner looks as seen on the CHARMS runway, there was plenty of bold winged liner inspo floating around. Lets break it down so you can try the trend.
Don't be afraid to go dark and long
The easiest way to try this trend without committing yourself to creating an avant-garde look is to apply the eyeliner thick and pull it out long. When you apply a thin line and pull it out as a wing, you will be enhancing the shape of your eye into the almond shape which can be look very attractive.
Go bold or go home
A graphic bold eyeliner look can increase the drama level of your makeup tenfold. To achieve this, use a smudgy kohl pencil or a gel eyeliner to fill in your entire lid and pull out a thick wing on either side of the corners of your eyes. With this look, you can keep the rest of your face and your lips neutral or bare.
Use your face as your canvas
Who said that your eyeliner must be restricted to your eyelids? Take a cue from runways and editorial makeup looks and play around with the area underneath your eyes. Graphic eyeliner drawn out in a shape of your choice under the eyes will certainly make you stand out in a crowd.
Play with colorful lines for maximum impact
Another fun trend we have seen on runways this season is that of pairing colorful and bold eyeshadow looks with winged liner. These can be drawn out in fun shapes as seen above, and some of these lines can even be made using colors that are complementary to the ones applied on the lid.
Play with textures and colors
If you are bored with simple eyeliner and eyeshadow looks, no matter how bold they may be, you can try and play with textures by using glitter or shimmer shadows to create designs in the form of fun-shaped wings. The wings could also be asymmetric or restricted to just one eye.
Draw a thick reverse winged liner for a safe but fun take
Let's keep it real. No matter how beautiful these graphic and bold looks are when seen on runways and editorials, many of us may find them intimidating to replicate. An easy way to dip your toes in the trend while still making a statement is to draw a thick, bold line underneath your eyes, which is also known as the reverse winged liner.
