The experts at Cosmedica Skincare highlight that dandelions have been around for over 30 million years. They are mostly found in parts of Asia, North America, Europe, and northern Africa and have been used by different cultures for medicinal purposes for centuries. While traditional Chinese medicine was the first to record its use over 1000 years ago, there is evidence that other civilizations also used it to treat skin ailments, amongst other problems. That being said, they are beneficial.

In fact, dandelions are being used more and more in skincare products for their benefits. Hence, it is important that we equip ourselves with the knowledge of the benefits of this natural ingredient as well as its potential side effects.

The many benefits of dandelions

Board-certified dermatologist Marisa Garshick tells Byrdie, "Dandelion, also known as Taraxacum Officinale, is a common flower that can be incorporated into skincare for its healing and soothing properties." She highlights its antibacterial properties, anti-inflammatory benefits, and the fact that it is high in antioxidants, which protects the skin from free radical damage to keep it looking healthier and younger.

On top of that, esthetician and founder of Farm Girl Soap Co. Angela Palmer points out that dandelions are anti-aging due to their high vitamin A, C, and E content. They are believed to encourage the healthy production of skin cells, promote the formation of collagen and elastin, even out the skin tone while reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and stimulate circulation for added benefits.

If that's not enough, dandelion extracts from the leaf and flower can also protect against skin damage brought on by UVB, according to a 2015 study published in Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity. Plus, dandelions have been linked to reducing skin inflammation, increasing hydration, and the production of collagen production, which could help avoid and attend some forms of acne, as per Healthline. Lastly, its anti-inflammatory properties could help in the treatment of burns and stings caused by insect bites or an allergic reaction to nettle (per Abloomnova).

What to know before incorporating dandelions into your skincare routine

For the purpose of skincare, dandelions are mostly used in the form of serums, creams, lotions, or other skincare products. However, along with the many benefits the weed has to offer, it's important to be aware of the possible side effects.

"Some people may find it irritating, while others may have a skin allergy to dandelions and can develop red, flaky, or itchy patches," Dr. Garshick tells Byrdie. On top of that, she warns of reactions if allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigold, or daisies. Therefore, before applying it to a large portion of the skin, a patch test is the easiest way to determine skin sensitivity to dandelions and is highly recommended.

On that note, Healthline points out that "dandelion may also interact with medications, including certain types of antibiotics, anticoagulants, and blood sugar drugs." The experts recommend consulting a healthcare professional if you are taking prescription medications and are keen to include dandelion in your regular routine.
