When did you fall in love with makeup?
When I was a little girl, maybe 4 or 5 years old, my mother put on a new dress with a small flower print, and then she applied such beautiful makeup; her lip color was the same salmon pink as the flowers in her dress. I was so amazed at how beautiful she looked, and I was so happy to see her like that. That was probably the first time I fell in love with makeup. I will also never forget the first time I saw one of the beautiful cosmetics advertisements created by Serge Lutens for Shiseido. It was so different from any other cosmetics campaign I had seen before. It was a piece of art, and such an unforgettable image and I fell in love with the makeup. I’m also continually inspired by the NARS advertising campaigns. They are so special to me and I’m so happy to be a part of them.
What was your favorite decade, as far as makeup is concerned? Why?
It is so difficult to choose, because I like a lot of them--the ‘30s, the ’50s, the ‘60s and ‘70s, but if I have to choose one, I love the 1960s! I like the whole style of the ‘60s, especially Twiggy’s look. I also love Bridget Bardot’s style! She had the sexiest makeup ever. I’m also really inspired by the ‘70s, especially the styles of photographers Guy Bourdin and Helmut Newton.
Which celebrities have you worked with in the past, and do you work with anyone regularly?
I regularly work with Penelope Cruz, Naomi Campbell, Anne Hathaway, and Hilary Swank. I have been so lucky to work with beautiful, talented stars like Alicia Keys, creating her look from her debut to her album covers, music videos and her Grammy appearances. I worked with Lindsay Lohan for the cover of her album A Little More Personal (Raw), and Ashlee Simpson for her album I Am Me, as well as one of her music videos. I have also created looks for Jennifer Lopez, Sofia Coppola and Sarah Jessica Parker for their events and award show appearances. I’ve worked with Ziyi Zhang, and magazine cover stories with Jessica Simpson, Scarlett Johansson, Joss Stone, Ashanti, Courtney Love, Chloe Sevigny, and Winona Ryder.
When brainstorming with a client on a look for an awards show, what's the most requested look?
The most requested look is a beautiful, smoky eye with a nude lip. Emphasizing the eyes and leaving the lips nude makes the look sexy and gorgeous. To create the look, I’ll build
