Love it or hate it, swimwear season is upon us, and thankfully, designers have a bevy of bathing suits to choose from. But before we jump into what's hot in swimwear for the coming season, we need to look at the outdated swimsuit trends that you should retire for summer 2025. According to Ira Lysa, New Jersey-based fashion designer, tailor, and CEO of Imperial Alterations, it's time to bid neon-colored swimsuits farewell.

Yes, the beloved '80s trend that created the neoncore resurgence of summer 2023 and was all over Olivia Dunne's favorite swimsuit styles in summer 2024 needs to exit your closet. Lysa also recommends ditching bathing suits with too many straps. "They feel more gaudy than attractive," Lysa exclusively tells Glam. In terms of prints, she says, "Things like tie-dye and tired florals have lost a bit of their retro edge, opening the door to a sleeker look." Along with '70s-inspired prints, old-school florals, and tie-dye, crochet is another retro-inspired trend that's past its use-by date.

And what about bikini tops? Remember when wearing your triangle bikini top in a different way, like upside down, was all the rage in recent years? Well, it's not so much anymore.

What to wear instead of these outdated swimsuit trends in summer 2025

If you're looking for the top swimwear trends of summer 2025, search no further. Ira Lysa exclusively tells us, "This is the season of minimalism with meaning." For starters, she recommends one-piece suits, with basic black having a major moment this year. Black is flattering on everyone, and it's available in a variety of styles, from halters that help support our chests to high-cut legs that help lengthen our gams. For example, the SUUKSESS Women's Halter One-Piece Swimsuit is jet black and has a ruffle around the bust line for added intrigue.

If you're looking for a fresh take on bottoms, skip the skimpy Brazilian micro-bikini bottoms and step into a pair of short shorts instead. They can look equally seductive but with a more playful vibe. When it comes to bikini tops, instead of the outdated upside-down triangles, opt for a demi-cup, balconette, or other style like scalloped that adds a pretty element at the bust line.

To replace neons, Lysa recommends earth tones. Think brown shades and muted green hues; sage green, for one, has taken over for "Brat" green, the outdated fashion color we're saying goodbye to in 2025. For instance, the CUPSHE Women's One-Piece Bathing Suit hits both style and color trends this year. And for a fun texture to replace crochet, try on-trend ribbed or crinkled swimwear. As Lysa concludes, "These styles not only look fantastic, they look like choices, empowering ones at that."
