How To Help Your Curly Hair Survive A Workout

Washing and re-styling your hair after working out is time-consuming, but even more so if you're a part of the curly crew. Unlike those with straight hair, those with curly or coily hair types don't need to wash their tresses on a daily basis. However, trying to protect or revive your day-one curls post-workout can feel like an uphill battle, regardless of whether you're a regular gym-goer or not. Thankfully, Glam reached out to Angela C. Stevens, award-winning stylist and co-creator of Cantu Protective Styles by Angela, for expert tips on how to protect bouncy locks during a sweaty gym sesh, which include hairstyle hacks, a prep routine, and a simple refresh.

"The pineapple is my favorite workout style and sleep maintenance option for curly hair," Stevens explains exclusively to Glam. You can do this by laying a silk or satin scarf at the nape of your neck, wrapping both sides around your hair, and tying it in a knot at the top. This way, you don't disrupt the curl pattern or alter the definition. "Once you complete your workout, remove the scarf and shake your curls back downward until they fall in the desired style," Stevens adds. "If you achieve your curls with twists or braids, keep your hair twisted until you cool down from the workout and then unravel once the hair is fully dry." Indeed, twists, braids, and the pineapple trick are some of the best ways to style your hair before exercising and are great for protecting your curls while you sleep. Stevens also reveals how you can solve your post-workout conundrum with adequate prep and the right products.

Tailor your weekly hair routine around workouts

The pineapple hairstyle is a game-changer, but it won't replace the need for a proper haircare routine. "If you work out several times a week, you will need to plan your cleansing and conditioning routine around your workouts at the end of your week," hair stylist Angela C. Stevens shares during an exclusive chat with Glam. "Hydrate your hair in between workouts with steam, leave-in conditioner, or your desired curl crème. For oily hair, co-washing the hair mid-week will be super beneficial for your hair and skin." If you're new to wearing your natural hair, co-washing refers to a popular wash method for natural hair wherein you skip shampoo and only use conditioner. This method suits individuals with coily or kinky textures, as this hair type tends to need more hydration.

"After a workout, assess the needs of your curls," Stevens goes on. "Most curly hair needs moisture, and sweat usually makes the scalp dry. So hydrate as much as needed for your curls and scalp care with oils like Cantu Protective Styles Daily Oil Drops with tea tree, or serums like Kevin Murphy Young Again." For a lightweight leave-in conditioner, she recommends Kenra's Blow-Dry Spray or Amika's The Wizard Detangling Primer. Stevens also recommends wearing low-tension ponytails and buns throughout the week. Incorporating these simple changes into your hair routine can revive limp post-workout strands into the juiciest curls that last all week.
